According to the Attack portion of the card, am I to understand that in the first round you lose 1 point (total) of either Sanity or Stamina, as an Investigator can't lose "1 point of Sanity and/or Stamina, split between the two..." as there's nothing to Split" with just 1 point loss.

Yep, always played this way. You can start splitting damages from round two
