Can Tannhauser be played by three (3) factions, ever (the Reich vs the Union vs the Matriarchy), or in its current form, this is impossible?

There arn't any official rules for this, but it can be done.

The one thing you should try is a 3 faction Deathmatch, with only one or two heroes per team so the map doesn't get overcrowded. After you see how that goes you could try some other modes.

One of the most engaging and fun to play games of Tannhauser i played was a three player/three squad game with full set of 5 figures per squad.

It was scenario based in castle Ksiaz, with an artifact recovery objective, it lasted for almost 4 hours and it was a blast

The only thing that had to be modified really were the entry points for the teams to make them at a roughly even distance from the artifact room/exit but that was easy to do, and rest of the rules were just standard Tannhauser revised

Ah, Entry Points I forgot to mention that, you'll need to add a third, and maybe a fourth to the Core Maps, thankfully the new Daedalus Expansion includes extra entry point tokens for those maps.
