Power Dice

By poobaloo, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

RTL says if you cant roll enough power dice, and you use a power potion, you can upgrade instead. (for example Karnon, who rolls 5 black all the time can upgrade 5 to silver instead)

Likewise if you use a Doom you can spend that on die upgrades as the OL.

What it doesnt say specifically is for the Titan ability - whereby units get an extra power die... can they take that as an upgrade too? The only case it really matters is the Master Dark Priest. Was the intent that the Titan's ability does not apply to that master, or that master would get to turn one of his blacks to silver, just like all the other cases where additional dice turn to an additional or upgrade?

Is it generally accepted that anywhere you could add a die, that means add a die or upgrade one?

I'm a little confused.

Power potions in RtL don't grant you extra dice, it essentially gives you 5 fatigue to spend to upgrade dice. You don't have to add black dice, you could take the ones you have and upgrade them. You could get 2 Gold and a Silver for example.

The Power card DOOM! just let the monsters roll an extra power die when attacking, not upgrade a die they have.

The Titan's ability is a bit tricky. They roll one extra power die of the best type they normally do. I don't think they can choose to take an upgrade rather than add that die. So if the best they roll is a Silver, then they add a Silver. To the best of my knowledge they can't choose to turn a Silver into a Gold.

I remember reading somewhere that in RtL, any mention of an extra power dice from previous sets (i.e Doom!), did allow an upgrade. Cant remember where I read that.

Titans ability is different as that specifically says a die of a type they already have.

Power potions don't add dice in RtL, they add 'boosts' which can be used to add or upgrade dice. Note that although these boosts act like fatigue, they are not fatigue, so no getting 10 'boosts' per power pot for Sir Validor! FAQ Pg 7

Power Potions
In the advanced campaign, power potions work differently from the way they are described in Well of Darkness. Instead of allowing the hero to roll all five black power dice on a single attack, power potions now give the hero five free "boosts" to his power dice, exactly as if the hero had spent five fatigue before rolling his attack dice. In all other respects, power potions are unchanged.

All effects that refer to Black dice in RtL instead refer to Power Dice and effects that add a black dice instead add a 'boost' that can either add a black dice or upgrade an existing dice. This covers Doom. FAQ pg 9

Q: When effects from “vanilla” Descent refer to black dice, how do they relate to silver and gold power dice? Does Doom! still add black dice at gold campaign level? Can Trenloe the Strong and Lyssa reroll silver and gold dice?
A: For Road to Legend, when an effect refers to a black die, read it as referring to power dice in general. If an effect adds a black die to a roll (such as Doom! or a power potion), it instead adds one “boost” as if the subject had spent one fatigue to enhance its attack. For example, a copper level Master Beastman, which ordinarily rolls 1 black die, could roll either 2 black dice or 1 silver die with Doom! in play. Lyssa and Trenloe the Strong may reroll
power dice of any color.

Titan special (I got this one wrong on an earlier question, so I am sure of it now!) is different in that it doesn't add a 'boost', it adds an extra dice of the type that the Master already rolls. Thus it cannot take this dice as an 'upgrade'.

In the case of a Dark Priest I would say that the Dark priest would therefore have 6 dice (he starts with 5 and specifically adds one of the best type he has - but as per the rules he is only allowed to roll 5 of them. Naturally, the OL will drop one of the weaker dice...
