How many Gate Bursts?

By Jorte, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hey guys,

So my Game is essentially going to be AH+Dunwich+Lurker+KiY.

Dunwich, and Lurker of course have gate bursts.

Is there a rule of thumb anywhere that speaks to how many gate burst cards to use in relation to the size of the mythos deck?

Which leads to another question, is there an "optimal" sized mythos deck?

More Gate Bursts the better demonio.gif . Depends on what you mean by optimal size.

Arkham Horror:
66 Mythos cards (Story Continues is a re-draw)
0 gate bursts

Curse of the Dark Pharaoh:
18 Mythos cards
0 gate bursts

Dunwich Horror:
36 Mythos cards
14 gate bursts

The King in Yellow:
27 Mythos cards
0 gate bursts

Kingsport Horror:
22 Mythos cards
7 gate bursts

Black Goat of the Woods:
23 Mythos cards
7 gate bursts

Innsmouth Horror:
36 Mythos cards
5 gate bursts

Lurker at the Threshold:
22 Mythos cards
7 gate bursts

The highest concentration of gate bursts in the deck occurs when you're using all expansions except Dark Pharaoh and King in Yellow (19.51% of cards). The concentration with all expansions is 16.00%.

The highest concentration from a single expansion is Dunwich, at 13.73% when used alone.

But in reality, if you want the most possible gate bursts, pick up Kingsport Horror and play against Atlach-Nacha: all gate openings are gate bursts! Yes, you read that right.

"Optimal size" could either refer to how comfortable you are with shuffling a huge deck, or how uncomfortable you are with a certain level of dilution. Without doing anything about it, all expansions together result in some serious dilution against Dunwich, Innsmouth, and King in Yellow's board mechanics. Some might say "optimal size" means one big expansion and one small expansion, but no more. I say "the more the merrier," but employ some rules for countering dilution.

I might say exactly that. I play AH + any other board + BG or LT or both. I am not lacking for Gate Bursts at all.

Yes, but I'm the only cook. I've got a variety of ingredients. And I've got Anti-Dilution working as my MSG.
