Updated core-set

By Lordgreyseer, in Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay

I´m a long time Game Master looking to try Warhammer FRP, but am not sure if I should buy the two guides and their vaults or go for the core set. I would probably normaly go for the core set, but since the rules have been updated in the two guides perhaps they are a better idea?

Will/has the core set been updated with the rules changes and errata that have come out since the game launched?

Thank you for your help

ALL HAIL THE HORNED RAT!

Core set hasn't been updated with updated rules from the guide as far as I am aware BUT the changes are very minimal, mostly around better explanation and guidance (which already appears in many instances in the FAQs) I think the intention is to at some point update the FAQ so that it includes any rule changes that the player's guide has over the core set.

If I were you, I would strongly reccomend buying the core set as this is still, (as FFG rightly states), the more complete entry point into the game.

I, despite earlier decisions not to, have also purchased the players guide, and it is a really nice product, and the appendices make good reference material, BUT it does not contain a lot of material over and above what comes in the core set. So if you are buying it you need to bear that in mind.

You could forego the core set and just get the guides (and vaults) but i personally wouldn't reccomend it; i think the price works out more for guides/vaults/dice compared to a straight core set anyway, so perhaps only useful if you are thinking your players might buy the players vault, and you'd only have to buy the GM vault? If you are going to end up paying for everything core set is the way to go... (plus possibly a players guide if you really feel you need a good reference guide and don't want to wait for PDF version, assuming they happen, or updated FAQs, assuming FFG are going to do that.

Off the top of my head, i think i can remember 3 actual rule changes in the players guide, that aren't in the FAQ (yet), and a couple of them you can find on the forums if you have a look... There could be a few more that i haven't spotted yet, but its not many. in total.

Creature vault and guide are both a good buy even if you get the core set, as they have geuine new material in, and other products SoF and WoM for instance have cards etc that aren't in the players vault, even though the card reference IS in the players guide.

I think FFGs intention for the guides is for them to either be bought by groups that don't want to use the chits and play WFRP Lite, so that group just buysd the 3 guides (although in reality the lite version doesn't really work out that way IMO), or for players/GMs who want more reference material to go with their core set.

The vaults are only really bought if you need extra tokens to cover large groups of players (core set is designed for 3 players plus GM, but can support more in theory).

I bought the GMs vault, despite the fact that i already have all the material, as it was a relatively quick and easy way of getting extra dice, extra stand ups and a set of action cards for myself! It certainly wasn't a neccessary purchase.

I don't have any intention of getting the GMs guide, as i already have core set plus WoM/SoF, so having the corruption and disease rules in one place isn't enough for me to buy it. As far as I'm aware it has even less new info in it than the player's guide (although again it does have plenty of reference tables if they are your thing).

Other people on here will probably have a slightly different take on things, but that's my take anyway....

Pumpkin you say extra action cards for yourself when buying the GM vault. But the player action cards are they not in the Players Vault? Or is it split between the two??

Gallows, the GM Vault includes a set of Basic Action cards.

Thank you Pumpkin for a very good answer, very much appreciated.

I'd not planned to buy anything but the Creature Guide/Vault, but I ended up getting the GM's Vault (Considering I needed more dice anyway, it was a small price increase) and Player's Guide as well. The Player's Guide is very nice, it makes me far less concerned over using the Core Set Rulebook as a tabletop rulebook to be tossed back and forth and pawed through by those filthy, nasty players of mine. They sicken me. (If any of them are reading, please understand that's heavy sarcasm. Don't kill me.) Having everything in one place is great, and there's something nice about having it hardbound.

I'm also looking into picking up the GM's Guide just to have the hardcover copy. I'm just having difficulty justifying it since it's not nearly as commonly referenced as the Player's Guide content.
