Online Play

By WillisRBC, in WFRP Rules Questions

I do most of my gaming on message boards since the gaming scene in my hometown is very minimal. Is it possible to play the third edition online with the new products that have come out? I purchased the initial box when it was released, but with all of the action cards and unique dice, it seems that it can only be played face to face. I'd hate to have to stop purchasing the product just because I can't use it to play in online games.

Does anyone have any insight into my dilemma?

Also, I've not found any rules for creating magic items and such in the new edition. I want to continue the storyline I'm currently running, which has the PC's in possession of a daemonic weapon, trying to keep it from the enemies of the empire that chase them, while trying to find a way to destroy it without becoming corrupted by it's influence. I know, very LOTR, but hey, it's classic and epic at the same time.

I'm pretty sure Emirikol and others have being playing it online using a plug in to map tools.

Full info about all the plug ins provided by Gitzman are here: (and they are really, really good...)

I'm sure one of them will comment when they see your post, but from all accounts, WFRP can certainly be played on line, provided its got the right support (the dice roller is great, for instance..).

As to creating magic items, currently (as in previous editions) WFRP considers magic items to generally be unique and created through many years of painstaking research, or at the whim of a chaos god,... which ever takes your fancy.

The system doesn't yet have rules for runesmithing (although this could happen in the Dwarf/black fire Pass supplement? or perhaps even in Omens of War?) or for general magic creation such as that that appeared in 2nd ed Realms of Sorcery BUT if all you need is some rules for a magic item that is al;ready created and in the possession of the PCs then there are certainly some ITEM cards that can help.

The GMs toolkit, I believe, has several, profane weapon immediately springs to mind, that could serve your purpose, and would at least provide some inspiration to get your started on fine tuning noe to your specific needs.

With the Players Guide, players now have access to all the career and action information that they need to play (without needing to buy the Core Set). As long as you use the dice tool, or have your GM roll all the dice, you should be just fine running a message board game now.

Indeed, you can play online. As it was previously mentioned MapTools works very well as a digital game board which you can share with other players. Emerikol, myself and others have run several sessions using it (and the ruleset we've developed avaialble at www.GitzmansGallery.com ).

MapTools is made by www.RPTools.net . They have a lot of tuorial videos, a very active forum community for development and are quite a hoot. Anyway, if you'd like to know more or need help, shoot me a message and i'll respond.

game on,
