Astropath Trancendants

By Luo_Kahn, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

I browsed the entire forum about astropaths, and one thing is still not clear.

If i read the book and these forums correctly, a starting astropath should begin with a psy rating of 2, which can be upgraded to 3 when reaching career rank 2. But under the description of the talent it says that the psy rating ranges between 1-10. How can an astropath ever reach a psy rating of 10 when the last talent moves the rating to 8 at the final career rank 8.

thanks in advance,

Just because psy rating is rated 1-10 doesn't mean that everyone is capable of reaching a 10. 10 would represent someone approaching the power of the God-Emperor Himself. If however you are set on getting above an 8 you can potentially ask your GM for elite advances.

Also keep in mind that rank 8 is simply the highest that Rogue Trader goes. While it is theoretically possible that there are more ranks beyond that, they simply aren't within the scope of RT.

Plot events, Daemonic intervention, Elite Advances, etc.

So basically not listed in the standard rules, but as always, if you can convince the GM you can have it.....

Just because psy rating is rated 1-10 doesn't mean that everyone is capable of reaching a 10. 10 would represent someone approaching the power of the God-Emperor Himself.

He On Earth would be a little beyond that. Taking a look over at Dark Heresy, we've got a Lord of Change with a Psy Rating of 9 (and some fancy extra rules that essentially make this worth a little more), the playable Primaris Psyker with 10 and another NPC called The Burning Princess with a Psy Rating of 14. Deathwatch Librarians also manage a rating of 10.

Okay, so maybe He is around 20ish+ or something (As much as you can give Him an exact rating). Point is 9+ is exceedingly powerful and so is in the realm of requiring GM permission.

Examples of Psychic Characters and their "maximum" Psy Ratings:

  • Adept - Lexographer path Psy 3 - The Mind's Eye Opens +1 Psy - Primaris Psyker +4 Psy = Psy Rating 8
  • Astropath Transcendant - Beginning Psy Rating 2 - Seven Ranks with 6 Psy advances = Psy Rating 8
  • Imperial Psyker - Savant Militant path Psy 5 - Transition Package - Primaris Psyker +4 Psy = Psy Rating 9
  • Imperial Psyker - Scholar Materium path Psy 6 - Transition Package - Primaris Psyker +4 Psy = Psy Rating 10
  • Space Marine Librarian - Beginning Psy 3 - Seven Ranks with 7 Psy advances = Psy Rating 10

Astropaths typically are not the strongest Psykers in the Imperium, though happen to be the most prolifically used class of Psyker outside of the Astronomic Choir. Also, before anyone nay says my Adept example, the transition package I listed was specifically designed to allow Adepts to ascend to Primaris, per Ross Watson.

And then, there's also Sorcerery, which is a very BAD thing.
