First Game Questions

By Mr. K, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Ok, I know these must have been answered a thousand times...BUT I can't seem to find the the exact aswers I'm lloking for .

We played our first game last night and it was epic, but two queries arose.

1. Confirmation needed of movement through Gates. We played it like this:

Turn 1 - On players Movement phase he enters a Location with a Gate. He has another world encounter. Draws Mythos card.

Turn 2 - On players Movement phase moves to second other world location, has another world encounter. Draws Mythos card.

Turn 3 - On players Movement phase moves back to Arkham location, and can attempt to close the Gate.

Did we get it right? If not, where did we go wrong?

2. Flying monsters...

Firstly, since flying monster are spawned at 'Locations' - do they need to get to a Street before they can move to the Sky?

Secondly, do flying monsters still require their dimension symbol to match the Mythos card in order to move? Or can they move on every monster movement phase, irrespective of symbol matching? (We played that they could move every time.)

Many thanks for your time!

Hello Mr. K,

and welcome to the Carnival gran_risa.gifaplauso.gifdemonio.gif

The movement sequence you followed is correct; basically:
1 - Movement: investigator reaches the gate and deal with monsters on it; Arkham encounters: investigator enters the gate; OW encounters: first OW encounter in the first area of the OW; Mythos: draw and resolve a Mythos card
2 - Movement: investigator moves to the second area of the OW; Arkham encounters: nothing, he is still in an OW; OW encounters: second OW encounter in the second area of the OW; Mythos: draw and resolve a Mythos card
3 - Movement: investigator returns back to Arkham & receives an explorer marker and a 1-round only free pass against monsters (you can choose to fight none or all the monsters on the gate, but you can also cherry-picking some of them, ignoring the others); Arkham Encounters: investigator can close / seal the gate; Mythos phase: as usual

Flying monsters: rules are a little messy, aren't they? Flying monsters move only (this is true if you play only with the base game) when their dimensional symbol is shown, as any other monster. Whenever they are in Arkham and have to move, you have to check whether there are investigators in the adjacent street(s): in this case, the flying monster moves to that street; otherwise it moves to the Sky. Next time they move, they will descend from the Sky to investigators in a street area (so they can appear in a location and move directly from that location to the Sky, but they cannot do it the other way round, unless some special circumstances are met)

Hope this helps!

Thank you very much! That really clears things up.

Only jst discovered this game - I can' imagine how I've lived without it!

Question No.1 : You are playing game correctly.

Question No.2 : Every type of monster need a matched symbol on the mythos cards to move. And flying monsters needn't get to street area before going to the sky.

I hope you're not playing that each player draws a Mythos card. It's only the player whose actual turn it is who does.

No, I think we got that bit cracked. However, with only two players even 1 Mythos card per turn seems a bit heavy.

But then again, we a new to this. It gets easier, right? Yig devoured us no trouble. sad.gif

That's exactly how I felt too after I got this game. How did I spend the last twelve years of my existence before I got Arkham Horror?

Another interesting question is how exactly did you manage to play a key rule wrong for two years gran_risa.gifgui%C3%B1o.gif (as in when can you close a gate after returning from an OW)? Two weeks I could get, maybe you didn't brush up on the rules in that time, but two years.

Dam, please don't remind me! llorando.gif I shall never forgive myself. My mistake shall haunt me forever....

Play with 2 investigators each! Bear in mind that your monster and gate limits will change with different numbers of investigators.

Ah, but I used to 'Call of Cthulhu' the roleplaying game for many years until our talented gamekeeper moved away. The rest of us just didn't have the knack for it, but if only we'd known this game had existed! It definitely fills the same 'vibe', which is a hefty achievement for a board game, I think.

I miss those days too. I mean, not your keeper, but my party :-) You're right, Arkham gives the very same feelings and sensations. Not to mention the emotion felt the first time I met Carl Stanford at the Twilight Lodge after playing the dam(n) campaign "The Shadows of Yog-Sothoth" (at least, this is the translation of the italian title) for almost a year. Lovable.

Heh heh heh... I love when people's maximum sanity goes down, especially for rules errors. Rub salt in his wounds, Dam! ;')
