But if we just play to win and analyse the strategy and check out gate opening frequency before we play then it seems to me this just takes away the actual fun of playing. This game is fun to play, thematically rich and immersive (one of the best, if not THE best of the boargames around) and I mean fun to play WIN or LOSE...

THANK YOU, Elendil23.

Avi! No! Bad metagamer! >THWAP<

All kidding aside, Arkham is one of the most accommodating games ever. It supports roleplayers, feeds rulebook lawyers, and welcomes bring-it-on game crushers. Play for the theme, play for the mechanics, the wins, the losses, the tales around the 19th Hole. You'd be hard-pressed to find two veterans who play it the same way, or even talk about it the same way.

.........but it's still fun to hit Avi with the paper. Woo hoo hoo hoo hoo hoo! gran_risa.gif

Beware Daffy (is that a Daffy sound?), lest I wrap you in the paper and let loose the flames ;'D

Eep. This is what happens when I pause a Buffy episode mid-way to respond to forum posts.

Just a side question/thought, wouldn't it make sense to let some gates remain open since if you get a Mythos card with an already opened gate you don't have to advance the DOOOOOOOOM track? I realize a monster surge isn't the most wonderful thing, but in a two play game vs. Yig, I like the surging rather than the Dooming... or are we do something wrong? The last part is always quite possible.

Another situation would be if the doom track is already almost full and it would take you too long to gather the clue markers required for sealing the required number of gates. Then it can be worthwhile to make a last-ditch effort to win by closing all open gates.

And then there are games against Atlach-Nacha...

Then you either don't understand its strategic mechanics or are playing it RPGishly. It's really easy to break it if you understand it. You can get sealing victories with a single investigator over 50% of the time. With two investigators it just becomes hellishly easy.

I agree with your statement, Elendil. If you play Arkham Horror by just numbers, statistics, and probability, it won't be fun anymore. But I still value the aspect of playing to win. And it's even more fun that no matter how hard you play, your plans end up futile as the Ancient One crushes you like ants! demonio.gif

I disagree ;') I've been playing the game as a strategy game for five years now. I still enjoy it. I like imagining what happens in the game even though I don't RP it at all.

And there's nothing wrong with that, Avi ^_^

Oh, I don't hate. I think I agree with...at least HALF of what you say. Obviously, we don't play quite the same game, but anyone who can get an in-road to the Elder Gods at FFG must know a thing or two about a thing or three.

It's just that Dam doesn't really play around here anymore, Tibs is maddeningly too methodical and logical to argue with, and who wants to jab at friendly-darling Julia, the angel of these boards? If I want to poke a hornet's nest...it's gotta be YOU, man. gui%C3%B1o.gif

I keep the hornets in my mouth, to spit at those who irritate me!

Sorry, HPL. That face is reserved for Dam. Though you could probably take it since his second most-used one is bostezo.gif
