Newb Story Phase Question

By Guitaraholic, in CoC Rules Discussion

If I'm the active player and I commit a single character to a story and my opponent commits a character who, during either the Terror or Combat Struggles, makes insane or kills (respectively), my character, does my Story Phase end at that point OR if my opponents character has Arcane or Investigator icons, does he go on to win those struggles?

Thanks in Advance!

He goes on to win those struggles.

Basically the way it works is that to start resolving a story there has to be at least one character committed there belonging to the active player AND that character has to have been there when the story resolution phase started (this is to get around some nasty things you could do with Military Bike, The Captain, etc and guarantee uncontested stories).

However, if the Active player's characters committed to a story all die/insanify before that story begins resolving the story doesn't resolve at all.

Ok, so to clarify. If my characters go insanse/get killed in the Terror or Comabt Struggle, that is the end of the Story Phase. The opponent doesn't get to "win" the Arcane or Investigation Struggles. Just want to make sure I've got this right.

No. If the defender kills the attacker's characters (Shotgun, Prize Pistol, etc.) before the Struggle start resolving, then there is no resolution of the Story. But once you start resolving the story, you go through it fully, so if you have 2 characters and lose one to Terror, the other to Combat and your opponent has A and I icons on his character, he gets to win those for their effects. Since there are Action Window after each Commit Step in the Story Phase before the actual Story resolution starts, removing characters is still viable after they've committed. Even taking control of a character committed removes them from the story.

One little clarification. If the attacker commits to Story 1, then the defender commits to Story 1, then through actions the attacker(s) at Story 1 is eliminated, you still resolve the story (Story 1). But if there was no defender you would not.

Per the rules:

During the story phase, in the order determined by the active player, each story card (that contains committed characters) must be resolved.
