Proposal for Campaign Options

By Klaus Fritsch, in Tide of Iron

In campaigns based on the Normandy expansion, where both sides have a "hero" company that can "level up", I would use the following rules:

The winning side can advance squads with at least two surviving figures (MGs and mortars counting as one figure).

The losing side can advance squads with three or four surviving figures (MGs and mortars counting as one figure). They gain some experience from being in combat, even if they lose, after all.

In a draw, both sides can advance squads with three or four surviving figures (MGs and mortars counting as one figure).

What do you think?

I like it a lot.

The thing that I missliked the most about the campain setting as written is that its one sided. One side gets all the upgrading between battle. In an RPG game where you have one game master (GM) and 3 or 4 players its ok. It seems like the campain is focused only on the US and the germans are only there to give the US a challenge, and if the german play as an GM, I guess thats might be great. And maybe the campain is best played that way.

But if the german player actually compete against the US, well, then its borring to watch your enemy upgrade your units while you get no benefit at all for doing well the previus rounds. In a competetive game, it is dangerous to focus the story on one side only.

Thus, I like this rule a lot.

I like the idea. A better use for these upgrade markers is to define unit quality in scenarios. You could make veteran units that can fight against green units etc.
