Skill overlap.

By karoline2, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

I've been wondering for a while, and figured I'd finally ask it:

When origin path (including career) gives you two skills/talents that overlap/are redundent, you get to improve the skill (from trained to +10 for example) or trade in the talent for Talented (any). My question is: Does treating a skill as untrained basic count as skill overlap? I ask because if you go backwards (as is an option) along the origin path, you'll already have the skill when you get the ability to treat it as untrained basic, thus making it redundant.

It depends really for me. In my case, when I'm Game mastering, i'll convert them as full fledged trained skills if it fit the concept of the character, or leave them as it is, and they do not count for overlaping/redudent skills. i'm more lenient for background skills like Speak (High Gothic) for instance on a Seneschal than Pilot (Space craft) on a Void-born Voidsmaster, who manage to already gets +10.

Personal view is that two untrained basic would improve to trained, but an untrained basic added to a trained would not have an effect.

A Basic you possess goes straight to +10 and skips Advanced, because that's just a distinction between types of skills, not a degree of training.
