Getting rid of annoying followers

By RedSimon2, in Talisman Rules Questions

There is a range of followers who have a negative effect. Their card text usually says something like "Can be discarded by xxxxx/at field xxxxx".

Is it possible to discard these followers at other occasions where you can/must discard followers, like vampire's tower, dungeon keeper, prison, cards that kill followers, gladiator who fights with said follower and loses etc?

I think you can only voluntarily lose a "negative" follower if you have no other followers to lose first.

Hmm, where does it say that?

Any more answers from the Talisman experts here on the board? Velhart, talismanisland, talismanamsilat, Dam, where are you?

Your infamy level isn't high enough yet. Gotta work on it cool.gif .

How would this work with the Vampiress' ability to sacrifice followers to heal? Can you sacrifice the Jester/Hag/Poltergeist to heal? They are followers. Another question is can the Sorceress or Vampiress seduce an animal or monsters and spirists charmed by the Minstrel/Cheiftan/Necromancer and use it in the same manner as the those characters would or in case of the Vampiress, eat them?

The Vampiress's ability works exactly the same as any other way of discarding Followers. You can only Drain them if you have no other "positive" Followers remaining.

No one can take any charmed/dominated/entralled Followers from another Character, since they are only Followers for that Character in question and no one else can have them. An Animal is only a Follower for the Minstrel and no one else.

Two seperate answers regarding the eating of followers from two seperate sources. Where does it say in the rules that you may ONLY discard a negative follower by completing what the follower's card states or it being the last of the followers? Not being able to charm enthralled followers does make sense though as they do not have "Follower" listed in their type.

From: The Wizard, on the other link regarding followers.

"I believe that the vampiress may eat them, but with the hag, you must first lose all your other followers, before you can eat her.

You cannot take, steal or target these special followers, as they miss the keyword follower, but you may ditch(discard), or sacrifice them like normal followers.

Regards."

For what it's worth, and this is by no means official, I play this in a very simple manner. A player may not ditch a follower that has text specifying how it must be removed (e.g. the Hag). However, all other means of ridding the character of that follower are considered valid. So, for me, if a character comes across any other special board space or Adventure Card that can cause a follower to be removed, then those "negative" followers are candidates for removal. This would also apply to a character's special ability, such as the Vampiress' ability to drain the life force of a follower to gain a life.

At any rate, my group doesn't impose some order of getting rid of the nasty followers last. If a character is lucky or determined enough to find an encounter that helps rid himself of the undesirable follower, then we congratulate him and move on.

The cell and the ice bridge are extremely good ways to get rid of the purely horrible followers, and the downright annoying ones (eg, the Clansman, for many characters).

Normal Followers can be Ditched whenever you want, so if the Clansman is becoming a problem, then just leave him in the space.

Thank you for all your answers. So it seems there is no official answer currently and I can play like I want to.

I think I prefer SneakyJoJo's way. I think there is no reason to believe that doing what the cards say is the ONLY way to get rid of the respective follower.

The Clansman can be dropped at anytime, ie: when you are about to get wrecked in a psych fight, you just drop him... That is covered in the rule book. He is not one that has special requirements for removal.

[This post is in error and I cannot figure how to remove it] The above post was intentional.

On the Ice Bridge Space you may ditch Followers to reduce the penalty and the chances to score a 1. They are not killed, they're left behind since their weight may cause the brigde to break and fall.

I don't think you can't ditch Followers that you can't ditch normally, such as the Hag, the Vagabond and the Jester, even on the Ice Brigde. Cell and Chasm do work instead.
