A couple of Questions

By coobe, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hello ! I just got this game and have a few questions from one of our first sessions.

1. Do you have Line of Sight around a corner wall ? if you consider the drawings on the tiles you wont have vision i assume

2. If you sell the Ring of Speed in town do you still have that extra movement this turn ?

3. Can you aim an explosion attack on a square with an obstacle ? ( like a rock)

4. Can you sell found treasures for half their price ?

Another thing which is concerning me, is if i should get all expansions right away. This game is awesome and very popular with my friends but im afraid i wont be able to get all expansions in german in like a year from now ( Road to Legends is already sold out in german)

Many thanks in advance!

1. If you mean diagonally exactly through the corner, then yes. Exactly through the corner does not pass through teh wall (corner is an infinitely small point that is not considered part of the wall itself, nor through any space that obstructs movement. For a closely related example see the diagram on page 10 (which unfortunately has several flaws, but still illustrates this at least once). Silhouette can see through the wall corner to her northeast. She should also be able to see through the wall corner to her northwest, to the southwest corner space of the main room (that is an error). Similarly Sir Validor can see through the corner to his north west (up into the northern passage, which is exactly the same as the missing sighted space I mentioned for Silhouette).

2. Yes. The Ring of Quickness gives you 1 MP, so you can use that 1 MP as one of the MP for the sale. Or you can use that MP to pass it to another hero, who can equip it and use it's MP also (the Elven boots which give 2MP can be passed around the party for a net gain all round if you manage it right)

3. Yes. It is clear, mechanically, that stuff in the target space does not break LOS to that space - if not then not only would Trees (a later expansion obstacle) break the game, but you would not be able to target a figure in the same space as another figure, which you explicitly can in the FAQ (usually during a guard action, as one monster moves through another).

4. Yes. Treasures are items, and items can be sold for half their value.

Whether you get everything right away is up to you. The game experience does improve with each expansion added IMO (and I think in most peoples opinion). SoB is probably avoidable for now, although hopefully the next FAQ update (probably due by end of march) should fix that. In any case, it is not recommended playing Advanced Campaigns until you have a fair amount of experience with the vanilla quest game. You need to have the mechanical aspects of dungeoneering tactics down almost unthinking, so that you are free to concentrate on the ongoing, updating strategic situation at all times. It is very unforgiving...

Some one Linked this site the other day, Easy to use for checking Line of Sight, it has been a awesome tool

Thank you very much, to both of you. Very helpful !

Is there any order in which i should get the Expansions ? Will they still be available in like a year or so ? I hope there will be a german reprint of Road to LEgends

Most of the expansions were just reprinted and shipped last month, so the game isnt going anywhere anytime soon, at least the English verisions. Has far as what order to buy them i recommend (Well of Darkness and Alter of Despair), There are many recent threads on expansion recommendations you can read through.

Most of the expansions were reprinted in December 2010? I can't find RTL anywhere, and Altar of Despair is out of stock on FFG's site--has it already sold out from that reprint?

From the threads here recently I get the impression that RtL can't be found anywhere, but you can find AoD here .

coobe's question 1 reminded me of a question I had regarding sweep and reach. Do you require line of sight to hit a monster with sweep?

Normally a Melee character will have line of sight to a the monster it is attacking but a character with reach and a feat card granting sweep could be hitting monsters around corners or behind rubble, is this allowed?

Yes, you need to have line of sight to the targets for Sweep to hit them. If an obstacle that blocks LoS is in between the attacker and a given target, that target is exempt from the attack. I'm pretty sure that's in the GLOAQ.

Even if it's not in the GLoAQ, it's fairly straightforward from the rules. Step 2 is "confirm line of sight" and says you can't attack a square unless you have line of sight to it. There's nothing in the sweep rules that override that, so it applies.

There is also a diagram on pg 23 DJitD which shows exactly this. Silhouette is not affected by the Giant's sweep attack because he does not have LOS to her.
