Questions tonight...

By RocksLikeToast, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Heya just got finished playing tonight and a few questions came about during the playthrough (as always happy.gif)

Question 1: We were facing the rumor that added a token to it when any investigator reached 0 sanity or stamina. My g/f had 1 stamina and was killed when a Cthonian hit everyone for 1 stamina... so she went the hospital, lost half her items and was delayed and we added a token to the rumor. The next turn came about and once again the Cthonian struck again before she had her chance to regain stamina...

while delayed does she still lose the stamina? or is she immune?

Question 2: Once again we encountered a rumor (rough game) this time it was the one where we placed monster trophies on the card and had to defeat them to pass. 3 of the monsters were Cultists but we were f acing Yig who adds a doom token when they are defeated.

does defeating Cultists who are not considered in Arkham add tokens with Yigs ability?

Question 3: This didn't happen during our game but the questions arose about the dual colored otherworldly cards that make you fight an AO. If by some extra rare circumstance you were in another world and actually drew one but it was against the games current AO...

do you still fight him in a one off? does it not happen? or does he awaken?

Question 4: Not really game related but I have played maybe 50 games with just the base game and for Christmas i got Dark Pharaoh and Black Goat card expansions.. i also just bought Kingsport which we haven't added yet. I have played 5 games with the 2 card expansions but in all 5 games we have drawn 1 exhibit, 0 corruption and gained 0 cult memperships, and never been barred. So pretty much aside from extra mythos and encounter cards nothing new has happened (i know you can play with them separate) but i was wondering if anyone has suggestions on how best to mix the expansions together (maybe cut the base game encounters in half?) i dunno.. any suggestions are welcome thanks.

-thanks in advance

#1: If you're in Arkham (basically not in an OW or LiTaS), you take damage.

#2: Yig doesn't care where the Cultists are, you kill 'em, you add a doomer.

#3: You fight him with the GOO's current doom quota (if it were not the GOO for the game, it would be at full health). Fight a "normal" one investigator final combat, only difference is that if it is the GOO for the game, you temporarily flip over its doomers for each hit you do, after the combat flip them back, you don't remove doomers from it (would possibly make the game an essential restart if you did win the combat).

#4: Sell KH gran_risa.gif .

I also have added Dark Pharoh (DP) and Black Goat of the Woods (BGOTW) to my base game, with nothing else so far. Here is what I do:

I have mixed all of the Arkham encounter cards together and then choose one expanions each time I play and simply ignore the encounters of the 'other' expansion. If you try to play both together you simply end up with very few Exhibit, Corruptions etc.

I have added all of the new common, spell and unique items from both expanions and use them all as if they were part of the base game.

When playing DP I keep the new mythos and other world cards separate (as per the visiting exhibit rules).

I have mixed the BGOTW mythose cards in with the base game and use them all as if they were part of the base game. If you don't like the idea of gate bursts during DP you can simply treat these cards as a normal gate.

Hopefully I have not confused you!

I know how to deal with Mythos dilution, but I can't do much about lack of Exhibits or Corruptions, except to say to use Dark Pharaoh / Black Goat on their own. It turns out that making Exhibit items rare is a good thing, because a couple of Dark Pharaoh mythos effects are made much easier by owning one. Corruptions won't make or break a game, but I do wish they were more common without having to use the Black Goat herald.

As far as wondering which expansions to combine, use this guide:

Could you break that down a bit more I dont fully get the relations, the base game (Arkham Horror) isnt good to use with any of the others?

Isn't it fairly obvious that you ALWAYS use the base game?

I have found that playing any single expansion board mixed with either Black Goat or Lurker makes for an awesome game without diluting any expansion too much. There will be enough activity on that expansion board to keep it lively, and the extra Arkham Location Gate Bursts of Black Goat or Lurker will keep the Arkham board from being too predictable (especially with Kingsport alone). When too many expansions are mixed together, activity on any extra board decreases dramatically (ghost towns), except for the Kingsport Rift Mechanic, but there's never a lot of "activity" in that town to begin with (that's not what Kingsport is for). The extra boards become little more than "gate buoys" to sprint for to prevent too many open gates from ending the game.

I've "retired" Dark Pharaoh because I just don't appreciate it anymore, and the King in Yellow dilutes pretty badly with even one more expansion mixed with it, which is made even worse per the fact that KY has ZERO Gate Bursts.

The illustration says that any expansion connected by a dark line was voted as a "good" combination. The numbers essentially mean that you shouldn't use more than 4 expansion, unless King in Yellow is one of them—then you shouldn't use more than 3.

I always play with all the expansions. Yup, I'm one of those crazy people! lengua.gif The only element I do dilute is the mythos deck. Some games, I randomly determine which mythos cards to ignore (such as the LitT during the previous game), and it works out fine for me. The only reason I do this is so that the expansion towns would have more gates opening.

Are they any dilution techniques that does not require so much setup beforehand? (Such as removing mythos, encounters, monsters, etc.)

Monsters are the only real PITA. Fortunately, I've never found a reason not to use the monsters from all expansions.

All cards can be sorted during play (by simply ignoring those drawn with unwanted symbols): No set-up time required. Much quicker.

I have Dunwich, King in Yellow, and Dark Pharoah, and I geet LOTS of added content. I haven't started playing with the Dunwich board yet (though I'll be doing that soon), so that takes out most irrelevant Dunwich Horror Mythos cards, leaving more room for random Exhibit items or whatevs. Also, it depends on how many investigators you play with. It sounds like it's just you and the lady, so do you pay 1 each, or 2 each in those 50 games? I've only played about 15 or so games with those added expansions, but I've collected about 15 or so Exhibit items, about every other game I get a Detriment, Benefit, or Barred from Neighrborhood. So, to be honest, I think a lot of it is how many investigators you play with. The more you play with, the greater chance you have at getting more neat things!

Though, it could just be a streak of bad luck...I've gotten plenty of special cards through encounters (both Arkham and Outer World), so maybe you're just not seeing them at the rate you should! Or...perhaps I'm seeing them more often than most...

heh thanks for the suggestions... this game never ceases to amaze me with the amount of questions that can arise during a game... but it keeps the game fresh i suppose... for the most part it is just me and my g/f that play but last night we played with 2 others and many times my brother comes over and plays... and still not to much has changed from the base encounters. I still enjoy the games but it just feels like i'm not getting the most out of them. My g/f ordered Dunwhich last night when she read that it was becoming hard to find... so i guess i'll be diluting my set with even more cards. I am going to try and figure out a happy medium for them...
