Immune to character abilities, kneel to save

By Cardinalsin2, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

If a character is "immune to character abilities", does that include keywords like deadly? If so, can you pick said character to take the hit from deadly, even though they are immune to it?

Similarly, can you choose a character to die, either as a result of deadly or a lost military conflict, then use a "kneel to save" effect to save them? Or is it only usable when you have no choice?

No. Keywords are not abilities.

I'm not sure why you ask. Any character chosen to die can be saved by triggering save effect. This is also true when you have no choice, for example when you must kill the only 1 participating character because of deadly. Triggered effects (begin with bold phase name or response) are always optional.

You may be looking at things like Maester Aemon and Viserys Targaryen and saying "wait a minute, I can keep choosing these guys to die for claim and save them at any time? Doesn't that make my opponent's military challenge pretty much useless unless they come up with a high claim number? That doesn't seem fair." If that's what you're thinking, the response is "yes, that's exactly what it means and no, it probably doesn't seem fair until your opponent figures out all the different ways to kill stuff - and realizes that they actually don't have to kill anything to win the game."

Just to be sure about tying this answer into the "immune to character abilities" title; remember that if you choose an "immune to character abilities" character to die, you cannot use a character ability to save it. Immunity means the card ignores everything, good and bad.

OOoo. Hadn't spotted that... interesting.

Thanks both for the responses. I had guessed correctly in both cases, but wanted to check.

It's worth to mention, that card with immunity is not immune to its own abilities (for example save from duplicate).

Followup question: if a character "cannot be killed" does that mean they cannot be selected to be killed? or that they can be selected but won't die?

This.

A character that "cannot be killed" is not an eligible target for a kill effect or claim.

On a related note - if a character is immune to events, and is killed, but is saved, can "He Calls it Thinking" cancel the save response?

Yes. See FAQ (3.19) Scope of Immunity, page 9.
