Exactly! I mean, I've never been terribly into the idea of Space Marines as characters in a roleplaying game anyway, but Deathwatch helped relieve me of my tensions somewhat. I'm still looking forward to Rites of Battle to expand the cast list somewhat though
A different take on Deathwatch

Lexicanium Gideon Keyes of the Dark Angels Chapter.
From the world of Tracy, the 88th colonised planet in the Scarus Sector, a Hiveworld rife with crime. He was part of the 'Yellow Jacket' Youth Crime Squad, preventing crime, until the Rock visited the world looking for recruits. He was on selected, and not long after his psychic screening revealed that he had significant potential within the Chapter's Librarius. He could not control or even manifest his powers though, so went into standard Scout training until a moment of great stress brought the powers fourth (still thinking what that might be). He was quickly moved to the hellish psychic training, and emerged a different person.
Sadly Gideon is naive, and tends to believe what he's told. He knows he has to hunt the Fallen, but does not know why. He's told to distrust the Space Wolves, but has never questioned why he should. He is held back by dogma and inexperience, but a series of events where he emerged an unlikely hero, including one where he managed to reveal a small coven of Fallen Dark Angels, saw him put forward for the Deathwatch. He has now walked into a world he understands little about, is paired with Marines from Chapters he has never encountered before... including a Space Wolf who has been assigned as his commander.
Essentially I want my character to go from a very strict Dark Angel who's always believed what he's been told to to someone who understands how to rely on others and even understand that the Space Wolves can be key allies.
BYE
P.S. And if anyone can figure out the where some of the references in his background come from, they get a cookie.

This I think is another key component that people miss when coming up with Marine characters- even if you stick with the stereotype (sans the psyker part), provided you're open to a character developing and growing, even the most cookie cutter starting character can become something very special and unique
