New Player - game play clarification

By Cthulhu Hamster, in CoC Rules Discussion

Hi All

Enjoying the dynamics and variables of the game

Would appreciate your help with the following:

1. In order to commit to a story phase - is it essential that at least one of your cards has a terror struggle icon? we've gone on the premise that if you dont have the struggle icon you cannot commit irrespective of the other icons that you have.

2. We're confused regarding the use of event cards bearing the 'X' cost - how do you determine the cost to release from a domain?

3. After being successful with the arcane struggle - the rules suggest that you can 'ready' a character committed to the story. Can you explain in what circumstances a character committed to the story would need to be 'readied' - bearing in mind characters can be driven 'insane' during the terror struggle or destroyed during the combat struggle..

Thanks

#1: No, you don't need any icons (or skill) to commit to a story, but with 0 Terror, you can also never win the T-struggle. With 0-skill, you don't even get a success token, even if unopposed.

#2: Generally X is whatever you want it to be, if you use a 5-resource domain, then X is 5.

#3: Committing exhausts the characters, meaning they are unable to then defend on the opponent's turn. WIth arcane, you can ready up defender(s). Some also have Responses that you might need them to be ready for. But for defense mostly.

Thanks for coming back so quickly - really helpful response.
