Homebrew Hulls

By HappyDaze, in Rogue Trader

I am looking to make a ship and I decided I'd like to start with an original hull. I'm going to share what I've come up with as well and invite others to post their original hulls here too.

Venture-class Cruiser (as per Lunar-class/Tyrant-class Cruiser except as noted)

Space: 72

SP: 62

Weapon Capacity: 1 Dorsal, 1 Prow, 1 Port, 1 Starboard

Special: This hull comes pre-equipped with one Compartmentalized Cargo Hold component. The hull's Space has already been reduced to account for this, however, when the ship is constructed it mus be able to provide 2 Power for this component.

The Venture-class is an ancient Imperial design that was originally built during the Age of Rebirth. Unlike most cruisers, it was not built to stand in the line of the Imperial Navy. Instead, it was designed with Rogue Traders in mind and was frequently awarded along with the Warrant of Trade during the early days of the Imperium. The Venture-class was never built in large numbers, and while production of the design is still within the capability of a number of Forge Worlds, few among the recent generations of Rogue Traders possess the resources (material and otherwise) to demand construction of such a vessel.

The Venture-class is intended to operate without the escort screens favoured by Imperial Navy cruiser captains, and as a result its weapon arrangement reduces the broadside complement to allow for a dorsal mounting. The integrated Compartmentalized Cargo Hold is intended to meet the needs of Rogue Traders, and reflects the non-traditional aim of the design.

Not bad, and overall an interesting concept and background. I think it should probably hold to the SP: 60 of the Lunar -class though. While it gains a Dorsal mount, it loses two broadside mounts to balance out. Either way, I'm gonna borrow this and go play around with my ship files.

As an aside, I've been trying to stat out the hull for the Adeptus Astartes Hunter - class destroyers. So far, it's not coming out quite the way I think it ought to, but I'm getting there.

We based the SP on the Tyrant (which it is based) and added in the 1 SP for the included Compartmentalized Cargo Hold. After some review, we also decided to reduce the Venture-class to "Armour: 19" as a bit of a balance factor to offset some of the utility of the Dorsal mount (which is generally superior to a paired Port and Starboard set). The explanation is that the numerous cargo holds spread across the vessel required a somewhat thinner armour belt than a standard cruiser of the line. The ship is still plenty potent and my players still find it well worth 62 SP.
