2nd edition vs latest edition rules

By Casper2010, in WFRP Rules Questions

Hi,

I haven't played of followed the new changes for several years now, but I am trying now to get an update. It seems that I have the 2nd edition rules and this isn't the latest, It seems there are more editions now.

Since I have (almost) the complete collection of the 2nd collection, I would very much like to know if it is really necessary to invest in the newer edition. If in the next editions there is a huge improvement made, then it may be interesting.

Thanks in advance for replying.

Best of regards.

It's a very different game in terms of game mechanics. I have been a BIG warhammer fan since 1st edition, but 3rd. edition is the best RPG I have ever played. It's not going to be cheap though if you want all the expansions... but the game is brilliant.

I agree with Gallows.

The newest edition uses the same setting and world, but is pretty much a different game. It has changed enough that is really isn't a "newer version". However, I enjoy the newest edition much more, both GMing and playing, than I did 2nd Edition. And that is saying something, because I firmly believed that the 2nd edition had previously been the best fantasy RPG I had ever played (and I've played a lot of different ones).

So yes, I would recommend the new edition. However, it isn't for everyone, and the initial $$ investment can seem pricey. I would recommend trying to find a demo in your local area, or someone in your local area that has the game and will demo it for you to make sure you like this edition better before committing the money into buying into it.

I explained 3rd edition to the players who had tried earlier editions like this...

It's like you've taken all text, that wasn't rules, and copied that, then put in rules afterwards.

To translate... setting, colleges, careers, monsters (goes with setting I guess) are copied over, rules are something completely different.

Regarding the rules, it's like teaching the rules of a rpg to someone who's never tried rpg's before. I say this, because I actually find these rules easier to explain to people who never rpg'd before, than people who're used to other rpg's.

People who're rpg "veterans" are sceptical with, but not limited to... range, dice, advancement system, actions etc...

People who never rpg'd just accept it like it is.

That said, the rules takes 2-3 sessions to learn well, but after that you'll find them very rewarding, compared to earlier editions.
