Do expansions rely on each other ?

By kalle, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

Hi,

Just played first games of Descent, and I really liked it. I checked out that there are already a set of expansions, of which especially the Road to Legends seems really tempting. Question is, do I need all the expansions, or can I use just Road to Legends expansion ?

Well of Darkness clearly can be used as a single expansion, but what about Altar of Despair, does it need WoD, and Does RtL need them both, in addition to the basic game ?

Well, I guess I'll play the game a few times before getting expansions, as there is a lot of components and rules as it is, but I just would like to know how to proceed.

Any hint on how You have used and liked the expansions is appreciated, thanks in advance. This is probably handled in this forum previously, but I just couldn't find the right topic...

Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on your point of view), the expansions are completely independent of each other for the most part. IF you are going to buy just one, in my opinion buy WoD if you want the same kind of game play as the core game, otherwise buy Road to Legend if you want something with more character development and an RPG feel to it.

Thanks, that makes decisions much easier, I'll get the WoD first, and the it's the Legend time.

I'd recommend Altar of Despair over WoD, because WoD scenarios seem to favor the OL too much (in my group, we must have achieved about 0% hero victory with WoD, with the OL player changing every game). AoD seems much better balanced.

If you can afford it, I'd recommend buying all of them in due time....they all have plenty to offer. If that's not such a great option, then you should get Road to Legend, in my opinion. Buy Road to Legend next, as it's in a class by itself. The only reason not to is you might want to gradually build up to it (first working your way through the entire gaming experience offered by "base Descent"). But welcome aboard, no matter which way you go, you can't go wrong, that's for sure!
