The number of Navigators aboard your PC's ship

By Eskilius Quinn, in Rogue Trader Gamemasters

Hey all,

I just got Into the Storm and I was reading about the number of Astropaths on a ship (Astropathic Choir) which got me wondering; how many Navigators are on the ship/s your PC's control? Do you not care and say that they have enough to 'get there' or did you place a specific number on board?

I'm a GM who likes all his ducks in a row and I doubt the PC's will interact with any Navigators besides the Head Navigator NPC I designed, but I still want to know what your thoughts are. If the PC Rogue Trader asks how many they have I don't want to say, "Well there are a bunch, so you shouldn't have to worry," then again the head Navigator may not want her Lord Captain to know how many Nav's she has in her command.

As I understand from the fluff I've read the Navigator is a navigator from a specific house/clan with the gift to sift through the warp so almost always a ship has a single Navigator and the Astropathic Choir is usually at a mimimum of 3 on any ship and depending on the ships size and importance can have up to oh...10-15 psykers in the astropathic choir aboard it.

In my campaign I decided the Navigator (GF) has two assistents to be able to work in shifts and not to become a hopeless drug addict...

I've ruled my PC's ship has 3 navigators (none pc's), so they can work in 8 hour shifts.

They also have 5 astropaths, with one 'main' one, and 4 helpers.

I try to keep things logical by looking at modern navy crews, hey tend to have triple of everything, for the 3x8hour watches.

The Outside Chance had a complement of seven Navigators aboard. These consisted of the Warp Guide (Senior Navigator, a PC), the Carto-Artifex (keeper of charts), three well-trained journeymen Navigators, and two young apprentice Navigators. Recently, the senior-most of the journeymen was lost to an accident involving a Halo Device and both of the apprentices are still in rough shape recovering from injuries received during the same event.

Thanks everyone. Happydaze, I definitely like what you've done with your Nav's on The Outside Chance. I'd like to copy it, but I'll leave the titles up the PC's.

Don't worry at all about "copying" since the titles came from the shipboard positions listed in Into the Storm. OK, I did elect to use "journeyman" and "apprentice" to describe the junior Navs, but that's hardly unique.
