Very New, a few questions?

By Bengo2105, in 2. AGoT Rules Discussion

Hi, I got a core set last week and have played my brother a couple of times. We have a few Queries?

1. Is there a character Cap?

2. If a card effect says i cannot declare defenders.. does my opponent declare them or does the attach go straight through? (i.e. Stannis Baratheon's Effect)

3. If you loose an Intrigue or Power challenge does the oppenent discard the loosing card as if it were a casualty? and if it looses a military challenge is it dead?

4. Can you use a Location/Character effect on the turn it is brought to the table?

May have more after another round tonight..

Thanks.

No.

Stannis says you can't declare defenders - generally that means he stops you from declaring defenders when the game framework allows you to do so (see flowcharts in FAQ). However you can make some defenders by using some effects like Greatjon Umber for example, as your normal action, that is after declaring attackers or after declaring (none) defenders.

I'm not sure I understand this question. You must kill characters for claim only after loosing military challenge. If you lose intrigue challenge, the only loss is a card from your hand. If you lose power challenge the only loss is power token from your House card. Of course keywords like deadly works in challenge of any type.

Yes.

1. No.

2. The attack goes straight through. Your opponent should remember to claim one power for winning an unopposed challenge.

3. You need to distinguish between two concepts here: participating in a challenge and fulfilling claim. Generally, characters are not affected negatively just because they participated in a challenge, whether the challenge was won or lost (apart from being knelt to participate in the challenge in the first place, of course). There are exceptions, of course. For example, the Deadly keyword targets participating characters, as does the event "A Lannister pays his debts". But normally, a character is not penalized just for participating.

Claim is another matter. If you lose a challenge as the defender, you have to fulfill claim. If you lose a power challenge as the defender, the winning attacker moves one (or two, depending on the claim value on his plot card) power tokens from your house card to his. If you lose an intrigue challenge as the defender, the winning attacker randomly discards one (or two) cards from your hand. If you lose a military challenge as the defender, you have to kill one (or two) of your characters. It does not matter if those characters participated in the challenge or not.

Another thing you need to get your head around is the fact that there are two different destinations cards that are removed from play can wind up at: the dead pile and the discard pile. The cards removed from your hand after you lost a intrigue challenge go to the discard pile, as do any cards removed due to an effect that uses the word "discard". Characters chosen to fulfill the claim of a military challenge go to the dead pile, as do any cards removed from play due to an effect that uses the word "kill".

4. Generally, yes, but that depends on the timing of the individual case. You can, for example, pay one gold to marshal Stormlands Fiefdom, then kneel Stormlands Fiefdom to reduce the cost of the next Bara card you marshal. You cannot, however, marshal Aegons Garden, then increase your gold by one, because counting income occurs before you marshal cards.

For detailed timing rules as well as rules clarifications and comments you should check out the FAQ document available from the support section of this site. Don't worry, it's not as complicated as it looks at first glance.

HTH.

The generalization you are probably looking for here is this: if the rules say that "player X normally does A" and a card effect prevents player X from doing A, then no one does A at that point. You do not switch it to another player just to make sure it gets done. An opponent can never declare defenders, or do any other action you are supposed to take, for you - unless, of course, a card effect specifically says to.

In this game, unless the rules or a card effect say you can do something, you cannot do it. This is different from some other games where, unless the rules or a card effect say that you cannot do something, you can do it.

than ks everybody youve been a great help.
