Also, this may be a bit preemptive, but I have been looking to "get my feet wet" GMing 40k RP for some time now. So if you were to need/want any help or advice on world/campaign building, the lore, etc I would be more than happy to assist. I wouldn't want to actually GM gameplay, but I have a lot of story and campaign concepts as well as a near-encyclopedic knowledge of the 40k verse that may be of use to you!
I wouldn't worry too much about that. I've been playing 40k since 2nd edition at least, still have my old ratty copy of the Codex Imperialis somewhere around the house, and a veteran GM of some years now as well. I got it covered. ;p
I do want to say though that right now I'm thinking of going with your character as the Rogue Trader. Genzer Maroke has an interesting background that will make for a very interesting story, and the only other character I've accepted so far, who is a Seneschal with the Child of Dynasty background, will play a member of a distant branch of the family who has survived the Purge with you.
However, you shouldn't be too eager to fill in all the blanks of your character's backstory just yet - a general sense of the more important details is usually best at this point. A lot of players seem to get over-eager and write out a short novel to describe their character's roots, but to me a lot of these fine details are best left to come out during the game. That said, I like the details of the Maroke dynasty, being framed for heresy by rivals and purged by the Inquisition, and Genzer himself having a shady background in underworld smuggling before joining the Imperial Navy - I think it's a great place to start.
Also, what e-mail service have you been using?
Thats awesome thank you for your complements, its good to know that my efforts have not been wasted! I have been playing around with different variations and concepts for this character for weeks now, and I finally settled on this just a few days ago. And the whole Seneschal thing sounds amazing, the exact sort of thing I was hoping for to be honest. I deliberately left the exact number/identity of Genzer's living relatives unknown, for at the very least some interaction - little did I expect one might be a character!
