Location questions

By vonswain, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I have a question about the locations on the board. I have read through the manual and looked on the forums and didn't see anything that deals with the little icons that are on the locations. For example at the Newspaper it has a dollar sign and a clue marker. I assume you take one clue marker, do you also take a dollar bill?

If there is a monster on the street, you have to fight it in order to get through right? Can two monsters occupy the same place (say the downtown location icon)?

That's it for now. Thanks for your help a head of time.

In the manual (it's very large, I know, and this part is just a small blurb), it actually tells you what those symbols mean. You have your encounters there by drawing an Arkham encounter card, and in those encounters, you're most likely to result in gaining something in either icon. For example, the news paper is a great source for clues or money (thus the magnifying glass and elder sign). Look through the manual again to find out what each symbol means. This, of course, doesn't mean these are the ONLY things you'll get, because sometimes you can gain sanity at the graveyard, or you'll get something bad. Depending on the place it's usually something bad...

For monsters, yes, you must either fight them or sneak past them if you enter their square (I'll assume you have just the basic board, so I won't get into "elusive" monsters or anything). If you choose to fight, you must stay there at the end of the battle, even if you have movement points left (assuming you win and aren't carted off to the asylum or hospital, of course), until the next turn. If you try to sneak past, you can attempt an evade check, on a success you can continue your movement, but if you fail you enter combat (see previous sentence) after taking stamina damage from the monster. Someone can, however, swoop in, kill the monster that's blocking your path before you get there, and then you can carry on and move on by, since the monster is no more.

Monsters can (and often do) share the same space. Some Mythos cards even release multiple monsters in the same area, and Monster Surges will also result in this, too! Each one must be "dealt with" one at a time. "Dealt with" meaning, you must "sneak or fight" each one before your movement phase ends. If you sneak the first monster, but fight the second, you still can't move any more, even if you beat the second. You can choose in what order you deal with the monsters, though, so you can try to kill one weak Maniac before trying to sneak past the mighty Dhole!

Hopefully this doesn't cause more questions than I answered, but we're always happy to help here. Feel free to ask more!

I had the same question, and that helps a lot - thanks!

I believe the black-background symbols are places you can guarantee getting a reward if certain conditions are met (money at River Docks, clues at Science Building, common item at General Store, etc).
