"When I don't fancy a man's eyes, I put an arrow through one."
- A Song of Ice and Fire, Volume III: A Storm of Swords
Hello and Welcome Back, Loyal A Game of Thrones Fans!
This week we continue our previews of the upcoming sixth and final pack of the Brotherhood Without Banners cycle of expansions, The Dreadfort Betrayal.
If you've been following Brotherhood Without Banners, you know that while each Chapter Pack in the cycle focuses on a specific House, featuring a few more cards for that House than for the other Houses, and that The Dreadfort Betrayal focuses on the House Bolton trait of House Stark. Another theme that runs throughout the cycle, however, is the Brotherhood trait, that is, the outlaw gang of Beric Dondarrion's Knights of the Hollow Hill. In this week's card spoiler, we take a look at another member of Beric's crew, Anguy the Archer.
Anguy the Archer follows along the general Brotherhood theme of effects that trigger off of a powerless House card. This can be useful in the early game, before you've gathered any power, or if you're running a heavy renown or infamy deck and are storing your power on your characters instead of your House card. It can be even more useful if you are running the Brotherhood Without Banners agenda, which redirects power away from your House card.
Anguy's ability is similar to, although less restricted than, Joffrey Baratheon's* ability, in that each time an opponent's character is killed he claims a power (limit 3 per phase). This can be pretty cool in the Joust, but it can also be really handy in the Melee where there are more opponent's characters to drop dead during the challenges phase. Moreover, Anguy's ability is not limited to the challenges phase and there are plenty of opportunities outside of that phase to kill characters. For example, during the plot phase, the obvious choices are Valar Morghulis** or Wildfire Assault; during marshaling you could use Ser Ilyn Payne or House Umber Berserkers; and during dominance you could use Guilty! or Aegon's Legacy***. The list goes on. Assuming you can kill throughout the round and keep power off of your House, Anguy the Archer can be a real game-winner.
So there you have it. We hope we've given you plenty to discuss here in the comments and on the A Game of Thrones forums. Until next time!
* Core Set, L36: "Response: After a Lord or Lady character is killed, Joffrey Baratheon claims 1 power. (Limit 3 times per round.)"
** If you're at 12 power, you can flip Valar Morghulis and kill everyone for the win - including Anguy, since his ability can be triggered while he is moribund.
*** And don't forget the Epic Phase: The Battle of Whispering Wood, Battle of Ruby Ford, Battle of the Bay, et al.
