Quarter Decks

By JCHendee, in Talisman Home Brews

These are only samples of cards from an ongoing (crawling) set of linked little projects. Still, some of them individually are usable as is. The images are all linked to their 300ppi printable versions (hopefully got them right). If you want to learn just a little more, drop by my blog (see my sig).

These are very cool. We've not played Talisman in over a year (been very busy with other stuff). But it is nearly christmas and my SO will probably enjoy a game of Talisman or two, so I have ordered Sacred Pool and The Highlands.

When I get those, I need to go through the Adventure Deck and ensure that there is at least a 50/50 ratio of Enemies to other cards. Last time we played, we spent most of the game wandering around looking for something to fight! It was very boring (and one of the reasons we haven't played in a long time).

Once I get a good sense of where the Adventure Deck currently is, I will trawl through all the cards you good people have made and print off the ones I like and add them to the already sizeable deck. That should keep my brother-in-law happy gui%C3%B1o.gif

Hello btw!

Yes, we too notice a little bit down count of enemies last time out... and it's been a while for use as well. (Mostly playing Runebound these days.) Like you, we may get back to Talisman over or after the holidays.

It's difficult to compensate for the proportional as well as balance problems in the Adventure deck.

Could be that there are generous amounts of Enemies in the next expansion gui%C3%B1o.gif

Have you heard anything about the next expansion?gui%C3%B1o.gifgui%C3%B1o.gif

I'm still hoping for the City, myself. Too much gold in the game with nothing to do with it.

Yes! or at least some more stuff to buy from the purchase deck. What happend to the bow and arrowshappy.gif

First four cards are excellent, reminds me of Dune word. Hope there will be also some Desert Worms and more cards working with Oasis and Desert fileds.

The other cards are also fine, however I do not like these new subtypes as Criminal, Noble etc... Do you have any other cards working with these subtypes or it is just for for "confusion" of the player ? :)

Hi Drakkan,

If you'd dropped by my blog, it would've explained the issue of subtypes.... and sub-subtypes. They can essentially be ignored except when using one of my earliest expansion, In the Balance, which has cards that affect other cards in play... in limited fashion by referencing certain subtypes and sub-subtypes... meaning just extra terms on cards. ITB has been around for 3 years, and among custom card players its seen some decent circulation for home made project.

I found extra terms were much easier for card interaction than having to list all the cards that one card can interact with... like the old Amulet. You can ignore these extra terms, even when using ITB and simply not use its extra interactions. That may require ditching a few cards from the expansion, like some Events that have effect are certain subtypes of Followers.

In the case of Royal Pains, the extra term "Noble" will be linked to a scenario (a revealed alternate ending) called the "the heir unapparent." It will be sort of a coronation race, requiring a little more than just getting into the CoC, and Noble Followers are ones that characters will try to acquire in order to crown one of them as the new monarch of the land. More on that at a later date.

And even when not playing that scenario, again you can ignore the extra terms and it makes no difference to play. I quite often add in little extras in an expansion, but almost always in a way that they can be used or ignored and not have to create multiple versions of a card.

In general, you are already familiar with (sub-)subtypes and didn't notice it. What do you think those Armour and Weapon terms are? Subtypes! gui%C3%B1o.gif

"Quarter Deck" Previews #2

Some of these may need more revision. If you want more detail on these, see the post at my blog. All images are linked to 300ppi printable versions which you can download and play if you wish until the expansions are complete.

How about taking all event cards out and form a separate 'event' deck. The events would then 'trigger' eg. every second turn by themselves. So the characters are not encountering events on spaces any more. This would probably improve enemy ratio and (possibly) speed up the game progress.

Trigger events outside the main draw of Adventure cards might be problematic. And doing it by set turns is actually a schedule rather being triggered by something inside the game environment. If you can find that inside trigger or triggers, it might be interesting to try. But an event every so many turns (whatever the count) would be too much for me and mine. Especially since events can either be across the whole land, only one region, or just one space.

If for a space, who does it then affect if it is drawn outside the normal processing of Adventures cards by individual players/characters?

More previews... some of these may still need a little work. All images are linked to 300ppi printable versions should you wish to put them into play. More later as time permits for more notions in working to complete these quarter deck expansions.
