Matriculator...?

By LETE, in Dark Heresy Gamemasters

Hiyas!

My search-fu was found wanting; I have to confess I'm stumped.

What is a matriculator? what is a matriculation engine? Are they the same thing?

Thanks!

after a quick plunge myself I can only conjecture that a matriculator is some form of complex calculator. Specefically it's reference in Execution Hour seems to be that of a highly advanced cogitator that is used for strategic calculations and three dimensional course plotting. perhaps an slurring of "matrix Calculator". other than that I got nothing.

I always thought it is some kind of calculator.

English definition of Matriculator doesn't make much sense as the noun of someone who has matriculated, the latin Matricula as a definition makes slightly more sense in terms of inanimate objects. Its a register that was used by the church as a roll of the clergy and for those who where recieving alms from the ecclesiarchy or worked for the church as laymen.

Basically, a database of people in the church or associated with it.

Hiyas!

I was asking about it because this item's mentioned several times in the "Edge of Darkness" adventure - Sikes has one (2nd hand, well-used) & there's another one in the office in the Alm's House too, I believe - & I haven't the faintest clue...!

Thanks!

In that case, MKX's post about it being a registry of sorts for "people receiving alms" sounds about right. Likely a database the Alm's House is using to keep track of the indents and which are most likely suitable candidates for study. Sikes' likely serves a similar purpose; at least in cataloging and tracking certain people and information.

Yeah, matriculation isn't a word we use much the US, but the UK still uses it to describe students registering for university. So to "matriculate" means you get added to the rolls of students at a college or university. Matriculation can be used to describe being added to any old list, though, so a Matriculator is probably some kind of registration system.

Taking the line of the thread one step further, a Matriculator could be the sort of computer (cogitator for our purposes) which is dedicated/optimised to performing database-type functions, organising and outputting tables of data and sensibly organising it all. So the 'matriculator' is only a small part of it. (Much in the same way that computing is only a small part of how we use computers.)

Basically something designed for handling and probing massive amounts of data.

Heh, it should be part of every Inquisitor's and Interrogator's standard gear, lugged around by servitors, attending adept and tech priest to stop it belching smoke and blue screening, probably an honour guard of skitarii or stormtroopers...

"Behold the **** List of Inquisitor ______. Note how embiggened it is!"

Because everything in 40k is big, ceremonial, impractical, outlandish, decorated with skulls but fun to laugh at :P
