Rules clarification

By Jonathan Ward, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hello,

When a Gate appears via an location encounter do you place a counter on the Doom Track as in the Mythos Phase?

When shopping what happens when you do not want the items drawn? Are you forced to buy one, say the cheapest (a terrible waste of hard earned cash) or can you discard them all. If so do you then go on to have an encounter in that location. I have a vague feeling that when I introduce this game to friends I will get some who will sit in the Curiosity Shop pulling cards until they get the Elder Sign card. Not sure how to head this off before it happens.

Got my head around the rules mostly and what a great game it is. Won my first game recently and was beaming for the rest of the day.

Take care one and all,

J

Yes. Anytime a new gate is opened (as opposed to a monster surge), a doom token is added to the doom track.

When shopping at the General Store or Curiositie Shoppe, you must buy one item if you're able to. If you don't like any of them, you better hope you can't afford any. Also, you can't buy more than one, even if you want to. This is exactly to head off Elder Sign farming.

You must buy one. If you want a thematic explanation for that:

Time is your enemy in the game. If your investigator has decided to go shopping, he won't leave empty-handed(unless he has no money to buy any of the items drawn ) and is pressured by time constraints into purchasing at least one trinket, thinking it will prove useful later on. This applies to all shops in the game.

As for the real reason: Tibs already mentioned it.

Cheers for the prompt replies...doom tokens even on location encounters, ouch! Just pushed my doom track up to 10 versus Ithaqua. The Investigators look a tad anxious...
