Hello, the RT core rulebook has very nice and simple rules for making archeotech drives (+1 speed, -4 space if I remember correctly). Could these changes also be applied to the new drives from Into the Storm by adding the appropriate SP cost?
Modifying drives from Into the Storm?
Yes. Just add the cost of the Modified Drive onto whatever the original version of the Drive would cost. For example, a Modified Jovian-pattern Class 4.5 "Warcruiser" Drive Would cost a total of 5 SP (or just 2 additional SP if you've spent the 3 SP to take Planetbound for Millennia) and would still be 4 less space than the non-Modified version.
Thanks a lot, I guess I have to look at some new builds.
I've played around with the idea myself. However, I do not think that the drives published in Into the Storm should be available as Modified Drives . The reason for this view point is that the Modified Drives are archeotech; old technologies which are hard or impossible to duplicate. The new drives in Into the Storm are just that, new patterns using current available technologies and exemplifying the ideology that "bigger is better. "

Well, "new" is a relative term in 40k. The Adeptus Mechanicus barely invents new stuff (heck, most even consider reverse-engineering a sin), they mainly try to discover old forgotten plans. It wouldn't be hard to imagine that equal drives to the "new" ones (and modified versions of them) did exist before, in the Dark Age of Technology.

Indeed. In a similar manner, it's quite possible to have a Tyrant-class with either "Wrested from a Space Hulk" or "Planetbound for Millennia" - both of which imply a very old ship despite the fact that the Tyrant-class has been around <3,000 years. In such cases, consider that you have an original "archeotech" example that may have been what the currently produced pattern is based upon.
