Question about cauterize Bright Order Spell

By midnightphil, in WFRP Rules Questions

Cauterize wound basically lets you convert a critical wound into a normal wound temporarily. Does this allow for the wound be be healed normally during this period?

Say I have 1 critical wound and 5 normal wounds. Then I get the critical wound cauterized. If I get healed of three normal wounds, can I choose to heal the "critical" wound so it's permanent?

No. The Critical needs to be healed the normal way. It just a temporary (until end of act) effect to ignore it, but it is still here. You should not turn the Critical face down but put a Token or tap it on its side or put the Cauterize spell on it (recharge is "!" ) to tell that you can ignore its effect for the time being.

You need a Sigmar's Comet to actually heal a Crirital.

As Cwell said. Cauterize allows the PC to temporarily ignore the debilitating effects of the critical, but it is still a critical wound.

But it can still save someones life without a sigmars comet. If someone gets more wounds than their threshold and one more critical than their toughness this spell could save the player and a quick first aid could heal enough wounds, so the player don't die once the effect wears off. It's a great spell.

Err... Hmm... This card is in need of an errata, I believe. Cwell2101, and dvang are incorrect, but only because this is the Rules Forum, not the House Rules Forum. The way that this card is worded (strictly according to the rules and ignoring common sense) it actually DOES allow a critical treated with it to be healed away.

"By heating your hand or staff until it is red-hot, you sear closed the target critical wound. That wound is treated as a normal wound until the end of the act"

I think it should be reworded to "...Ignore the effects of that critical wound until the end of the act." or something similar. That's for Jay and the gang to decide. There's no errata for it. What it DOES say is "...treated as a normal wound..." Normal wounds can be healed. If the target critical wound - the one that is being treated as a normal wound - gets healed via another spell, first aid, a healing drought, etc., it is returned to the wound card deck, and it is no longer in play. At the end of the act, the card does not pop back out of the wound card deck and reapply itself as a critical to the player. No, the effect is done; healing the wound made the "...until the end of the act." condition of cauterize irrelevant.

Let's use Helmut as an analogy. Things look dire for Helmut:

  • Helmut has a Toughness of four.
  • Helmut has three critical wounds.
  • Helmut's Toughness is reduced by one (to three) while Pustulos the Weeping's "Stench of Nurgle" card is recharging.
  • Helmut then takes an axe to the face and is knocked unconscious, recieving an additional critical wound.
  • Helmut now has four critical wounds, which is greater than his (reduced) Toughness of three.
  • Helmut is DEAD.
  • When Pustulos' card recharges Helmut does not get up and say, "Morr had to cancel our appointment."

Nope. Helmut stays dead, as unfortunate as that may be.

This Rank 1 Bright Order card, as written, can be significantly better at curing critical wounds than the Rank 3 Shallyan "Cure Critical Wound" card. That's just wrong, in my opinion.

Thorvid. IF the player with the critical wound being treated as a normal wound has ALL normal wounds healed, then yes it would be returned to the deck. Nothing in the rules suggest that players pick which normal wounds they heal, but since this normal wound is under influence of a spell it would naturally be the last one to be healed. But "Until the end of the encounter" also means that the critical wound WILL reapply itself because even though the player had the normal wound healed, the critical wound is still there, so healing the normal wound is irrelevant really. The reason it being treated as a normal wound is important is that it could save someone from dying (by having more critical wounds than toughness), while if only the critical wounds effect was ignore then the character would still die.

Edit : nm, i don't wan't to start argueing ...cheese all you want
