Other examples of FAQs being overridden?

By The Old Man, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

I'm trying to get the rules to the basic game straight in my head. So I was perusing the Kevin Wilson thread and read this:

"Monsters and movement as a result of an encounter (01/02/07)
When moved to another location by an encounter, you don't have to fight/evade monsters in either location. At least, not immediately. Combat as a result of such movement only occurs during the movement phase. During the encounter phase, you only have to worry about monsters popping up to attack you as a result of an encounter.

This rule overides the following FAQ v1.2 entry:
If a location card tells an investigator that he may move to another location and have an encounter there, what happens if the location has a monster and/or gate on it?

First, the investigator must successfully evade or fight any monsters at the location. If successful, the investigator has a normal Arkham Encounters Phase at the new location, following either the Gate or No Gate instructions on pages 8-9 of the rulebook."

Are there other examples of the FAQ being overruled?

Also, off topic, if an investigator is moved to a location because of an encounter and there's a just a gate, when is the investiagator sucked into the OW?

1. "Ashcan" Pete has printed Sanity of 4 and the Ally Duke as a fixed possession. Is his starting Sanity 4 or 5? His maximum is 5 with Duke, but does he get the extra point at the start of the game?

Pete's max at the start of the game is 5, but he starts with 4 Sanity. Duke only increases the max, he does not give you an extra point of Sanity.

I invoke the rarely-exercised power of decision reversal. You DO get the extra Sanity when starting the game with Duke, and the FAQ will reflect that when updated.

My apologies for the confusion.

If an investigator is moved to a location that has a gate, and he is told to have an encounter at the new location, then his encounter is to enter the gate. If the encounter does not say to have an encounter, he does not enter the gate.

I understand what you're saying, but could you point out the rules you are using to come to this conclusion?

It's more of a composite.

Page 9 of the rules:
2. Gate (Arkham Encounters)
If the location has a gate, the investigator is drawn through the gate. He moves to the first area (the left area) of the Other World indicated on the gate marker.

This rule I'm sure we're all aware of. Your encounter when on a gate (and without an explored token) is to enter the gate. When an encounter says to move to a location and have an encounter, you do exactly that. You move to a location and have an encounter. If there is a gate there, your encounter is to enter the gate.

But unless you're told to get a new encounter, you don't get one: your encounter for the turn was the one that told you to move. Each investigator gets only one Arkham Encounter during their AE phase unless the encounter tells them to get another one. One piece of evidence of this is the fact that you are not allowed to go to the science building and trade in two gate trophies to receive 4 clues. Your maximum is to spend one gate to take two clues. You can dissect a second time by having a second encounter, but that will require you to do it next encounter phase, since there's no other effect granting you a second encounter. Likewise with the scenario in question: an encounter that moves you to a gate but does not instruct you to have an encounter will not cause you to enter the gate, whether you want to or not.

I have a question about this issue of... "encounter - moving - another encounter"...

if a have an encounter that tells me to move to another location and have a new encounter... ¿can I "travel and return" to the same location I was?

For example.... in the newspaper there is one encounter that let you travel to another location and have a new encounter.... but sometimes is quite useful to have "a second encounter" in the same newspaper... and you all know what for!!!!! u_u

Well, it's been ruled that the Dark Pharaoh benefit cards that cast effects on "another investigator" literally mean another investigator. So if your encounter says to move to a location of your choice, you can move to where you are (stay put) and get another encounter. But if the encounter says to go to another location, you must move.
