Theme for the next expansion?

By mi-go hunter, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Okay, I know that another AH expansion won't pop up in a while. But would anybody like to make a prediction about what it's next theme would be? So far, all the small boxes have been Ancient One related. KiY: Hastur. CotDP: Nyarlathotep. BGotW: Shub-Niggurath. LitT: Yog-Sothoth. Will the next one follow the same trend? Or will be based on a particular Lovecraft story such as the Mountains of Madness? What do you guys think?

Is Lurker based on Yog-Sothoth? It seems like a good match, but I haven't heard that there's an explicit connection. However, there is an explicit connection between Dunwich and Yog-Sothoth. And why just limit it to small box expansions? Innsmouth Horror has a connection with Cthulhu.

I'm guessing that on balance, FFG will consider Yig and Ithaqua to be not interesting enough to tie an expansion to.

Yeah, though despite the whole Cthulhu-Innsmouth thing, it's surprising that he never got a small box of his own. Maybe because he's too iconic. Azathoth is the only other really important figure, but that would be...difficult. I wouldn't rule out Ithaqua, but I suppose I could also see a Tsathoggua expansion. Glaaki would be a lot of fun, but unlikely.

I wouldn't say the Lurker expansion ties directly into Yog, which I think they did on purpose since the Dunwich Horror does that already. But, the Lurker story was based on Yog-Sothoth, and so they put Yog's picture at the top of the Reckoning Cards as a nod.

Also, Yog is one of the nastiest AOs to use with the Lurker herald and the replacement gates. Two successes to close a gate is bad enough already, but now we have an additional –1 to checks to close the gates, there are fewer gates to go around, and one of them even has the Endless ability so that it couldn't help you win by closing gates or against Yog in final combat.

I would love to see At the Mountains of Madness as an expansion. After all, who says the AO actually HAS to be an AO? Isn't the expedition itself enough to provide for an epic endgame? You could have a Supplies track instead of a doom track, with different effects happening as the game progresses.

Eh... He's still easy. You just need to take a couple early game bound allies with your sealers and of course with the pacts, it still won't be a problem... But, yeah, I guess he makes for the hardest (i.e. least easy) AO/Lurker pair.

At the Mountains of Madness seems like it should be its own game. Its not like it could be a big box where you add a new section to the map that is Antarctica.

Yeah, I think Mountains of Madness will be out immediately after the movie is released, and it will probably be a game a la Mansions of Madness

Hey it just occurred to me that because of the movie that there will probably be a video game too.

True, I think after the Mountains of Madness movie comes out, FFG will probably concoct some game related to it. However, how about AH expansions? How long will it take before they release another one?

A lot can depend on how trademarking goes. With a movie coming out its quite possible that the studio has trademarked the title on a bunch of different things. While Lovecrafts works are public domain a movie based on them is not so things could get prickly if the studio decides to be jerks about trademarks (as studios often are). The movie might actually be a guarantee that we will never see FFG do a mountains of madness related game or expansion.

I guess we will just have to see, but since Del Toro seems like he is a Dagonite, he may not care at all if something else spawns with the name At the Mountains of Madness.

I wonder if he plays Arkham Horror......

Well aside from a completely new game, it seems Mountains is more suited to be a Mansions expansion rather than a new AH add on. As for what that could be when (rather than if) it arrives, i have no idea but Im hoping for a blender to finish things off.

Why not?

I'm not expecting to be able to catch the train to Antarctica but you could maybe get there (& back) through some new game mechanic or through a gate.

Our best chance to find out - the Arkham Nights event - was squandered by people who dont know how to interrogate lengua.gif

Screws, blowtorch, sandpaper. You'd think it's SOOOO hard. Why is there no eye roll emoticon?

The River Docks would actually be a better place to take off to Antarctica. I have a really good feeling that if there's ever another AH big box expansion, it's going utilize this location like the train station. Yeah... that sounds like a pretty good idea.

I've always been pretty skeptical about the possibility of implementing a Mountains of Madness expansion at all plausibly, but I suppose the first few locations on the board could be hard-going ocean locations that give you a few turns' worth of encounters along the way. Come to think of it, it needn't only be Antarctica; rather, that could be one neighborhood, and there can be a couple other global destinations on the map too. Of course, if it's too hard to get to, you wouldn't want there to be many unstable locations down there, but I'm sure they could come up with something.
