Sister Mary's Special ability question.

By Tomsc, in Arkham Horror Second Edition

Hi,

I'll confess I don't actually own this game but I've played it a few times with freinds (we each own a few FF games)

We find Sister Mary is a good character to play, right up until the point where she looses her blessing. My question is this, Does she roll to loose her blessing ? It seems a little unfair as she is the only character who will most likely loose her best advantage at some point in the game. So should you

1) Ignore the rolls for Sister Mary and let her keep the blessing the whole game (probably a bit powerful)

2) Make her roll as do the others (potentialy making her very weak)

3) Do what we've done of late (house rule) and say roll, but if she looses it she can return to her home location and get it refreshed for free ? (Seemed about balanced to us)

I Guess I'm realy after the answer as to the true interpretation of the rules, and maybe some opinions as to our house rule and what others do.

I'm new to this forum so I'll apologise now if this question has been asked a few times but searching showed up no answers. Also scanning through 30 pages where people put QUESTION as the title with no clue as to what the question is about is of little help to others :)

We always played her as written. But you can houserule that she never loses her blessing(unless she's cursed).

In the Innsmuth expansion every investigator gets a personal story, passing which that investigator gets some benefit. Sister Mary's personal story balances her character making her blessing last longer.

Yeah, basically Sister Mary isn't as good as it might seem. I mean... the Holy Water can be useful, but it's one use only. The cross is thematically ok, but it's not a Tommy gun. And the blessing is ok, but can be lost - in case of bad luck - in quite a short time. Her Personal Story, as Zealot said, fixes this problem a little. You can find her PS here. This is probably the best fix for this character. Nonetheless, even with her PS passed, she still isn't the *top* character of the game

I can't remember exactly where I read this on the forum, but I believe the was an "official" suggestion that Sister Mary can spend clue token to re-roll her blessing.

I played as Sister Mary last night and implemented this, however she didnt lose her blessing throughout the whole game!

I'd say there was someone watching over me, but we were finished off by the Ancient One....

So there was someone watching over you...and he found you delicious

Kevin Wilson himself proposed it at one point.

Her personal story in Innsmouth goes a long way to fixing her. Though, surprise surprise, the wording on her personal story card is ambiguous.

For my house rules, I restrict her to "nun type" spells: Bless, Heal, Cloud Memory, Greater Banishment, Revelation of Script, and Intervene.

Also, people in Arkham won't deliberately hurt Mary unless they're cultists. For example, if she crosses Carl Sanford or Sadie Sheldon, they'll have her escorted to the street, but they won't actually beat her up. Because, you know, nun.

Carl Sanford would totally beat up a nun.

Dude, the STL is one of the closest clues to Mary's starting location. Her max Stamina is 3. She's got to avoid the STL because Stanford's henchman will send her to the hospital just because she doesn't start with enough money to join his stupid order. Lame. If most humans won't hurt her during encounters, you can use her amazing luck to explore locations around Arkham. She still has to deal with monsters, cultists and unseen forces that throw things at her, so it's not like it's a cakewalk.
