A skills question

By Drglord, in Descent: Journeys in the Dark

For some it might sound stupid but isn't your character limited on what skills he will learn depending from his starting skills? I mean if a guy draws only wizards cards can he learn the fighting and rogue skills?

For some reason i had deduced that was the case but since a player has pointed out that to me i have start questioning that thing...

"When purchasing treasures or skills, the hero player draws the card at random from the appropriate deck (selecting any one of the three skill decks when purchasing a skill)." (p.18)

No restrictions.

A hero could always purchase Trait Die in a previous unknown Trait, correct?

Yes. Although trait dice are not actually linked to skills in any mechanical way, if that was what you were getting at.

It is true that most (if not all) officially published heroes have starting skill values that match their starting trait dice, however, there is no rule that says this must be true. It's just how the heroes were made and, barring homebrew content, players are limited to whatever heroes FFG sees fit to make.

When purchasing skills draw random cards? Mmm... Sorry but i was referring to the advanced campaign my bad... But i guess this should apply to that also.

No it shouldn't - you most emphatically cannot buy a random skill from the town shop for 1000 coins in the extended campaign.

But I don't think your skill types are restricted in the extended campaign either. I know you're allowed to start with a random skill of any type, regardless of your starting skills (you start by drawing your printed starting skills, plus one from any category of your choice, and keep one card). But I don't know the extended campaign rules well enough to easily find a quote for you, so you'll need to actually read the rules yourself or wait for someone else to quote them.

There's nothing to quote, as there is no restriction on buying skills only from your starting skill set.

There is a restriction for only getting feats from your starting skill set, and that is often misread or misremembered and then inadvertently applied to skills. I know our group did it for a while. But there is most definitely no rule in the advanced campaigns that prevents someone from buying a skill outside of their starting set.
