Didn't he supposedly give up making THE HOBBIT to do this film?

Either way, totally stoked for this film

I don't think his dropping the Hobbit had anything to do with MoM but it freed him up to do this. He has been talking about wanting to do this one for years though.

Del Toro leaving The Hobbit was the worst cinema news ever, but that he's now making this is the best cinema news ever! And since PJ's taken back the reins for Hobbit everything is hunkydory in the world again. But yeah, Guillermo left The Hobbit because he couldn't commit to living in New Zealand with his family indefinitely whilst MGM got their sh1t together. So he's been producing tons of stuff (The Orphanage is well worth a watch, for example) but this has always been his dream to make and direct. And since his buddy James Cameron has backed him up who would deny them from going ahead now??
