How Do You Keep Track of Ship Combat

By Mystrunner, in Rogue Trader Gamemasters

Hello, all.

I've run my third session of Rogue Trader now, and have struck upon one difficulty; keeping track of all the various components, statistics and other rules for NPC ships in combat. How do you all track Morale, Crew and fires? Do you have any favorite methods or tools?

I have to say, so far I've found it pretty straight forward... but to date I've only ever had to deal with 2 NPC vessels at most. There's really only 3 stats per ship to be tracked... Hull, Crew & Morale and then take notes on Crit effects, so 5 or 6 lines per ship on a notepad is more than enough in my experience.

I've toyed with repurposing the old BfG rosters, but so far, I've not found the need to use more than the sheet of scrap paper upon which I worked said NPC ships up (or copied them on, in the case of the major NPC vessels).

I create the ship character sheets before play begins so i know what each vessel is capable of. If i have to spring a surprise ship on my players (due to them going off avoiding the plot) then i just recycle an old ship.

When in actual battle i have a small notepad which i use to track hull integrity, morale and crew pop for the enemy ships. Often i dispense with crew and morale for NPC ships unless the players specifically try to target them.

I find this works fine.
