Noob taking it all in, wondering about some stuff about the Imperium...

I see no mention of W40K's equivalent of TV networks, newspapers, radio, or else (the so-called "media") in the hive (I guess that everywhere else depends on what the Powers That Be think about it, but mostly NO)... Are there state (hive) channels running (maybe because the hive's such high-tech level), for instance, or is it truly a "Middle Ages feel", with a "town crier" announcing the news?

Honestly, I can only comment from Gaunt's Ghosts, which revealed the pressence of propaganda posters and thus I would assume printings. From the same series it shows that for err I think it was a mining colony chaos took over, but regardless they had a PA style system going places. There are also pieces of equipment that enable the recording of images like a video recorder, so I guess its possiable.

Remember the Imperium has like a million worlds so I do not think it could easily be ruled out. That said given the nature of the Imperium I would think its mostly propaganda films, or quasi-religious in nature such as 'Ways to be a proper pilgrim' sorta deal.

A standard hive (barring regressing to feudral/feral, many worlds do regress - though its not themetically normal with hives) isn't really "dark ages", not sure where your getting that from. As for communication/tv.etc.etc... It really depends on where you are. Wealth is concentrated at the top and works it way down; the top would certainly have something indulgent like that, mid hive it would be around in a variety of form - it doesn't tend to be about excess (again, this is really all per hive) but a more utilitarian approach since people are workers and .. Well, pretty much an indentured servitude. You can decide in what form it exists, but broad casts and propaganda would be normal. Down hive I would say it wildly depends.

will I do not have much of a backup for the following, I play it like this:

there is mass media, but it is mostly Radio (Vox) and perhaps Television for some middlehivers. Media is in the firm grasp of the government and the ecclesiarchy, so your new will mostly be propaganda. I could imagine vox-speakers in better districts, so important news are heralded directly into the streets (like the latest victories of our glorious armies or the upcoming curfew).

Anyway, I simply would not think of television our radio the way we use it. Our society is first and formost a consumer society. We spend much time to earn money so we can spend the rest of the time spending it. Since the Imperium is more feudal in nature an the masses do not have much money, consumership has not evolved outside of the classes of some privileged few. Thereby, do not expect movies or television series. At least, not on over 100 channels.

Talking media, "latern shows" (like "holo lantern") get mentioned frequently in the fluff, so I expect they have something like movie theaters...but with holo projectors.

in my opinion anything is reasonable for your story with 2 limitations

the administratum gets its tithes

and nothing the echlesiarchy considers heretical is broadcast

that being said id say it does depend on the position in the hive, is nightly news out of the question, dont see whynot, broadcast fights from the arenas for those that cant atten inperson? sure,

underhive i could see printing presses but that lends itself to recividism(sp?)

heck most of the teevee i watch myself is sports these days, "numbing the mases" and the more things change the more they stay the same

From the fluff book "Lord of the Night" there is religious broadcasting stations and big TV screens like in big cities just randomly placed in hives for general spread of information and worship but seeing as how there are the Sci-fi futuristic planets to the medieval/fantasy ones I say go nuts and do what you want to...
