Mind probe [Again]

By Commander Feast, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

OK this became a longer post than I intended hope you don't mind the wall of text and sorry for asking something that has probably allready been answered a hundred times over (tried searching without much luck.

So I'm playing an Astropath in a game with my friends and took the Mind Probe power, now I already looked at the errata and I am still a bit confused, so I hope someone here can help me out.

I discussed these 3 options with my GM:

1. Mind Probe only requires 1 focus power test: At each round you break the subject a bit more and gain new information.

(personally I found this to be too over powered, almost nothing can withstand a opposed willpower test where the psyker gets +5 to the roll for each effective psy rating. Also how do break the connection other than physically moving the psyker out of the powers range to limit the amount of information he can get? The way I read the errata though, this should be the right option).

2. Mind Probe requires 1 focus power test to activate, each round you make a new "focus power" test to maintain the power and dig futher into the mind of your subject. These subsequent tests do not incur psychic phenomena.

(This seems more balanced, but again it will be very hard to keep information from the psyker).

3. Mind Probe requires 1 focus power test to activate giving you acces to the basic information as per the power description. Each round after the first you make an opposed willpower test to gain more information.

(This is currently the one we are using, it might be a bit underpowered but we would rather upgrade a power than nerf it).

PS. We are both rather new to the system and I only had the option to use the power a few times so far. So if you have any "official" answer a link would be nice. (need to print it and show it to my GM)

Thanks in advance

On a side note.

If I by any means could get my hands on a Force weapon and the "Swift Attack" talent can I use the special power option on both attacks or only once?

IIRC, it should be option 1.

Unless you have an amazing willpower, or an item that gives resistance, or are a psyker yourself, you arent supposed to be able to resist the probe very well. The psyker should be able to dig deep into any unprotected mind with ease.

Mind you (and your GM too) there are trivial ways to get around this. Set it up so the minions know nothing. You may know that he loves musical theatre, but if he dosent know where the bad guy is, he just dosent know. Set it up so that the henchmen are protected. You may be able to dig into his brain, but only if he dosent bite down on the suicide pill before you know it is there. Set it up so that the BBEGs leutenants are more protected. You may be able to capture him, but when you try to probe him, he gives you a psychic slap. There is also the classic 'He had a stroke when you accessed the secret' defence.

Mind probing dosent have to mean you immediately get all the bad guys plans the first time you capture a minion. It should work roughly the same as other skills that give info, like having to use Tech-use and Security to get into the bad guys secure vault, or having to use inquiry and shadowing to find the bad guys hideout.

Thanks for the quick reply, glad to hear I read it right.

I have no doubt that my GM will find ways to limit the use of this power, I actually discussed some of the things you mentioned with him when I bought the power. Still it seems like a powerfull tool.
