Clear, revised, easy-to-use Errata

By Colin Chapman, in Dark Heresy

Hey,

I applaud James, Maxx, and FFG for producing the errata, but I feel errata should always be extremely usable above and beyond its other concerns. It is a tool. It should be quick and easy to consult, the information and changes easily accessible. Unfortunately, while pretty, I feel that the official errata fails on this count. The information is buried in the text, and the text is unnecessarily long and not concise enough.

I've just about finished revising the entire errata, and I've made it clearer, easier to use. In the process, the page count has been massively reduced (from 16 down to 9 pages, not including a cover page).

Compare:

Official Errata example:
The Heightened Senses talent on page 117 should include the addition: “Note that Heightened Sight does not add its bonus to Ballistic Skill tests.”

My revised errata example:
117, Heightened Senses Talent , add: “Note that Heightened Sight does not add its bonus to Ballistic Skill tests.”

In every case I started with the page number, then what the errata concerns (in Bold so it stands out), and then what needs changing.

All of those changes to the Skills/Talents of the Career Advances in the errata have also been placed in a table, so they can be read at an immediate glance:

Compare:

Official presentation:

Archivist Advances on page 45 should include the Common Lore (Imperium) skill at a cost of 100 xp, the Common Lore (Tech) skill at a cost of 100 xp, the Literacy skill at a cost of 100 xp, the Trade (Copyist) skill at a cost of 100 xp, and the Light Sleeper talent at a cost of 100 xp.

My presentation (very roughly how it looks in the table which is set up in Pg., Advance, Modifications, S/T, and Cost columns):

45 Archivist + Common Lore (Imperium) S 100 xp
+ Common Lore (Tech) S 100 xp
+ Light Sleeper T 100 xp
+ Literacy S 100 xp
+ Trade (Copyist) S 100 xp

I won't have time to make it pretty, or add nice DH-esque fonts, etc. but if anyone is interested in doing so, and wants a copy of the Word document when I finish it tonight, please let me know.

cheers!

Colin

Send it my way. [email protected]

Holy Throne of Terra YES!

Is there a way to send a PM in this forum, so that I can send my email address to you?

Would it be rude to say "WANT!"?

Please PM me when you have the finished file.

Hey,

Well, I've finished the revised Core Rulebook errata. I made a few more changes to enhance user-friendliness. For example, the v 1.0 Errata and v. 2.0 Errata are separate sections, and do not run together, so those with 2nd printings can easily print out only the section that applies to them. Similarly, the Appendix is a single separate page, so folks can print it out or not as desired. Because not everyone buys every supplement, I'll be doing the Inquisitor's Handbook errata as a separate document (2 pages, one for v. 1.0 InqHB Errata, one for v. 2.0 InqHB Errata).

Ultimately, this means the final errata, if combined, would only save a few pages over the original, but it's a LOT more user-friendly as a result. For example, as I have the 2nd printings of both the DH Rulebook and InqHB, I only have to print 9 pages, and can do so without printing out any earlier errata I simply don't need.

Peacekeeper, a copy is winging its way to you already. The other interested folks can't be sent PMs, on these forums, it seems. If either of you are on the Dark Reign forums, pop me a PM there.

cheers!

Colin

I would be most interrested in a copy thankyou, if you would send it to [email protected] I will be gratefull.

Call me in! [email protected]

Thank you for doing all the work for us.

Can I also get a copy? [email protected]

Thanks.

On its way. Remember though, folks, it's very plain and basic at the moment, using no fonts beyond TNR.

cheers!

Colin

[email protected] would gladly accept this new erratta!

Just a suggestion, but why not host it on a free file-sharing site? Then you can just link people to it?

Because someone may want to tart it up a little and pdf it, and at that point I'll likely share it as a download on Dark Reign or something.

BTW, just finished the revision of the Inquisitor's Handbook Errata as well.

cheers!

Colin

You could also just make it available to the people who worked on and created the errata last time. Maybe they can throw this up to FFG for reformating in In-Design and, from there, Errata v2.1 or some such?
