The Binding of Dark Gods

By Attila-IV, in Dark Heresy

This is really cool and something I might shamelessly copy, creating my own Libellum for my techpriest char. Can't wait to see the finished product. Shame about the ruination of the original though.

Project Update:

The cover has been bound together, textured, painted, and the icons have been affixed. However, I'm not satisfied with the results yet. I'll be posting more photos and instructions once I'm done touching the cover up. Sorry for any delays.

We wait anxiously for your next update, Tome-Master.

What an entertaining thread. Awesome work. You should also post more of Mr. Graves Evil Deeds!

Besides, I own such wooden coffer, too. Hmm, the ways of chaos seem unpredictable.

Any update on this yet?

Expect some by Sunday. An unexpected firing at work left me filling in for 8 days straight and unable to put the next round of touched on the book. Until then, here is the cover of one of my Necronomicons.

The blackest of books

Rock on, you are very good at this

Methinks that you could make yourself a tidy sum of money on the side by offering up custom bindings. Even I want these books, and I don't like hardcopy RPG material anymore. gran_risa.gif

I mean . . . I don't do this for the money. But I am not above taking commissions. I'll discus more when this project is complete.

Part 8)

After texturing the cover and compressing it to counteract warpage, it was time to pain the cover. The first layer of paint was comprised of randomly applied blotched of deep blue, moss green, lime green, and a few shades in between. I wanted to give the cover the appearance of having been bound in xenos hide, and avoided using a single uniform color to give things a more organic look.

Once the cover was dry I went over it again, this time dry brushing with yellow and neon green to bring out the details in the texture. Once dry, the cover took on the appearance of old, weathered xenos leather. Did the skin once belong to an ork, a grox, or possibly a kroot mutation? A more obscure race now lost to extinction? The details are lost to history.

Part 9)

With the paint dry it's time to attach the icons. This was accomplished with hot glue. Of course, no self-respecting Inquisitor or Cultist would admit that hot glue was holding his lore book together. The dark times of the 41st millennium require something time tested and far sturdier. In the grim darkness of the future there are only rivets. For about $1.50 (£1.10, €1.17 if my conversions are correct) you can get a box of upholstery tacks. These are my rivets of choice. For this project I choose tacks with the look of antique brass that had been etched with little scratches to imply wear. The tacks can be easily driven into the foam core board with a little pressure from your thumb. There are two possible complications. One, if you are not using foam core for your cover you may find that the tacks cannot be driven in without considerable force. In the case of a wooden cover, you are going to need a hammer to drive the tacks home, but the force needed may damage any ornamentation made of less sturdy materials. Two, your tacks may be so long that when driven into the board you find a 1/8" or more metal spike sticking out the other side of the cover. Make sure you measure to tacks to see if you need to trim them down. Mine were almost 1/4" too long. But with some wire cutters you can trim them back to a manageable size. If not, you may find metal spikes digging into and damaging the pages of your book.

Here is the cover in it's current state.

The cover, with texture, color, and icon.

A close look at the spine, with ornamentation.

Show a little backbone.

Another look at the cover, with better lighting.

Note the look of the cover, suggestive of aline leather.

Thank you all for your feedback thus far. I can't wait to share more of this project.

Next up, we'll be adding additional ornamentation and detailing. Then, the re-binding of Dark Gods.

This is great, never thought a rebinding can be fun. You have a evil cat. happy.gif What model it is?

Marvelous work. I iwsh I had both the know-how and motivation to do such a thing.

It looks disgusting! In an evil chaotic way of course gui%C3%B1o.gif Nice work.

(My emphasis.)

And - oh! - what an appropriate typographic. I don't think that it could have been any more perfect! gran_risa.gif
