Space Expanders 2.0

There aren't too many around here who may remember this cooperative development project. I won't go into a long explanation. You can find out more by downloading the Space Expanders (1.0) package at TalismanIsland.com and I will be loading them into the "Downloads" page at FantasticDiversions.blogspot.com later today.

In the meantime, I've had a few new Space Expanders lying around for a while that might be of interest to a minor few... those who don't care for all of the back doors into the CoC. Or those who just want a tougher game once in while when limited play time isn't a factor.

Space expanders are place on a their mentioned space before a game begins. They remain there for the whole game and are not removed, effectively changing small aspects for the game for its duration. They can be used as a change of pace now and then without (1) altering the board itself and/or (2) remembering any rules in effect for the night. Depending on their description, they either augment or override instructions for the space they affect.

The Dark Portal is intended to plug the Dungeon's back door into the CoC. You still get to bypass the Inner Region by making it through the Dungeon, but... you will still need the games namesake -- a Talsiman -- to win the game. You can use it with or without the second card.

The Passage of Fire is intended to make the Valley of "Fire" actually mean something, finally, as the dangerous, deadly place its name implies. It may seem like it is pointless, since movement in the Inner Region is one space at a time and under player full control (unlike random movement in the rest of the game). But if you stop to think, you'll see some possibilities. I've already seen three games where competitors found multiple ways to trap a competitor -- momentarily or longer -- in the VoF. Use you imagination, look at the Spells, and then Character abilities. The possibilities are there.

The Lost Dwarven Mine is just a card for the Highlands that matches other cards made for the main Adventure deck where entering a place to be accosted or find treasure were altered. Instead of one of the other, the greater the danger you face, the greater the reward... or sometimes you still find something for free.

That's all for now, and as yet, these are the only new cards beyond those found in Space Expanders 1.0. I have no idea if I'll ever accumulate enough for a full 2.0 release. Perhaps I'll take a look at the back door in the Highlands, though it is far less certain than the one in the Dungeon.
