Board Expansions

By Echuir2, in Talisman

Not to say I don't like the mini expansions (I do love them). I was just wondering if there are plans to at least finish out the other 2 corners with boards. When I play with the 2 that are currently available it bothers me that those are just empty. I know in the old version the 2 corners were "The Forest" & "The City". The forest would be a nice expansion like the dungeon and the highlands or maybe even a graveyard or crypt expansion. However instead of the city I think I would prefer something that keeps the theme of the other corners, maybe have the plains link to a desert board that plays like an arabian knights theme with Djinn and such.

In the highland rulebook it is detailed that the land of Talisman is surrounded by four regions. You can bet there'll be two more boards to come. If they continue the release schedule to date, we'll get board expansions in spring of 2011 and 2012, and card expansions in the co responding autums.

As for the city, I think it could be good. A place to spend all the gold wound in the highlands!

i really am diggin the idea of a city board expansion

I'm not really sure how an Arabian Nights desert board would "keep the theme" of the other corner boards any better than the City would. Perhaps you're thinking of each corner board as a bordering country or something? But the Dungeon already doesn't really fit with that idea.

I know the old City expansion from previous editions had its supporters and its detractors. Personally I was one of the former. The City is the one corner board I'm waiting for on baited breath (now that Dungeon is out anyway. =P)

If you're worried about being "stuck" with four specific boards you don't necessarily like, keep in mind that it's entirely possible FFG will just keep going with new corner boards after the initial four. It wouldn't be unprecedented for FFG to ask you to pick four boards out of X many available. Assuming sales are sufficient to support the venture, anyway.

Even if they don't make official boards, it's not outside the realm of possibility that fans could make their own realms to either stick over unwanted corners or mount up in such a way that they sit flush with the rest of the boards.

Personally I DO like the idea of the City expansion and even the Forest expansion (the elf gets no love). However I also think a Sea expansion would be interesting. The storm river by the Village could empty into it. Then we'd get to see new characters like a pirate, corsair, distant traveler (I'm thinking martial artist), or merfolk. In any case, whatever expansion they decided to release next involving cards, I hope they add some trinkets into it so it's not just the Highlands implementing those rules.

For non-board expansions, I kinda hope that one day they make an "expansion companion" expansion. Namely it just adds cards and implements rules to all the decks that utilize rules introduced in other expansions. For instance:

1) Trinkets in the Adventure and Dungeon decks.

2) Brand new relic cards (primarily to reduce the chance one draws the overpowered Arnkell relic).

3) Cards for the expansion decks that make use of the Stable deck.

4) Some sort of monster creature or creatures that work like cerberus except they guard the entrances to the expansion boards

5) New Warlock Quests that utilize the expansion boards (EG: Read a book at the Library, Discard 3 trinkets, Move the Reaper onto a character or creature, etc.)

I'm also kind of hoping to see an alternate ending card that forces the players to do some co-op play (sort of like everyone vs. the board, a la Arkham Horror style)

A guy can dream I guess :)

Oooh! Sea-expanison. Me LIKE! =)

So far I have just thought that a forest would be the most likely and best expansion for the village corner. Perhaps with dual entries or something, maybe one from the graveyard to a haunted forest and passageways between the two.

But a sea-expansion would really expand (pun intended) the world of talisman. Islands and maelstroms. I would like it to be more of an "open" map though. Not sure how right now. But it would probably be possible without breaking the style of the game to much. (Perhaps restrictions to the spaces like "you need a boat to get here" and "you need a sail to get here" and such, so you "unlock" more parts of the area after questing and get better means of travel).

Is there a sea-expansion in an earlier Talisman? Haven't heard of anyone.

I liked the city-expansion in Talisman 2, where you could walk in a circle, and enter buildings. not as linear as the two current expansions-boards.

Go to TalismanIsland.com in the Expansions page and look for

  • Azoic's "The Dragonland"
  • Azoic's "Timescape" remake
  • Pascal Smeel's "Far Outer Region"
  • Arkon & Jon New's "Timescape Upgrade"

Wow...we think alike! I have been making such a board for a while now and was considering submitting it to FFG for posible publication or ideas. I even have 10 characters to throw into the mix.

I do have a question about some of the old characters....are they off limits? I was hoping that some would get made in some of the smaller expansions but the put out new ones instead?? Just wondering.

Ellraiser

about the cerbereus though as i just got the reaper expansion does the cereberus start off on the pop or does someone have to draw it first

It must be drawn first from the deck.
