I was trying to come up with something a little different for a Baratheon deck and I wondered if anyone has managed to put together a competitive deck based on "Power Struggle" plots? I built one and I've played a number of games with it and it has a win/loss record of about 50%. I will post the full decklist a little later when I have the deck handy if anyone is interested, but it is a joust deck that isn't designed for rush. It seems to recover nicely from resets and hold its own on each round, but I have a hard time making that final push for power for the win, and I'm worried that it is a bit too slow; most of my wins come on Round 5 or 6.
I need a little bit of help with the plots, I feel like they need a bit of tweaking...
Plots
Fury of the Stag (power struggle)
Red Wedding (power struggle)
Lineage and Legacy (power struggle)
An Empty Throne (power struggle)
Feast or Famine
Fear of Winter
Stoic Resolve (3rd or 4th plot, if no reset has occurred the intiative is usually enough to win me first player and I kneel out everyone on challenges so they cbk) - instead of this I've added and removed Valar a couple of times, can't decide if I want it or not.
One good thing about the deck is that, unlike many Baratheon decks, I don't need to worry about getting out a specific character, the deck isn't crippled if Robert or Melisandre dies, for example. Hence no Power of Blood and no Stay of Execution (even though it's a Power Struggle) in the plots.
Characters:
I use core Stannis, 2x Renly (Raven's Song, Power Struggle draw mechanic) 3x Ser Eldon Estermont, a couple of core Robert (combos with Ser Eldon), and a decent number of "Lady" characters for use with Red Wedding. I've added and removed different versions of Melisandre and haven't found that any one version makes a huge difference in the deck, though the Return of the Others version is nice with Ser Eldon and Robert - once Ser Eldon has some power, all 3 making a power challenge at once can net me 7+ power.
Locations:
the important one is 3x The Stormlands (plot gains "Power Struggle Trait, increase power challenge claim by 1 if it is already a Power Struggle), and I also use Claw Isle for the free power grab and the extra card draw on Battle at the Wall.
Events:
2-3x Starve for Your King! for the 4 extra gold on Power Struggle plots, 3x Battle at the Wall for card draw.
Attachments:
Lightbringer and Motley, 3x Art of Diplomacy, tried Martial Law for a while but it wasn't that useful.
I'd welcome any thoughts and feedback (and Robertesque guffaws at this nonsense if you feel it appropriate)
Power Struggle Deck?
I was working on a deck like this a few weeks ago, essentially the same build. It was focused mainly on power challenges (since thats what the claim of the Stormlands increases), so I was using the core 1 gold stealth bastard, edric storm, and an empty throne to get off more successful power challenges, combined with 3x seductive promise because your sure enough going to win one by 4 if your doing enough of them. I was looking at using the heralds too just to keep some consistency with the uniques - it doesn't really have a linchpin but getting Renly or core Stannis increases the potency. the Bara scouts are really good to - vigilant and renown for the first challenge. You can mil with stannis and them, go unopposed, both trigger their renown, and the scouts will stand. Its a neat idea.
Let me know how well it works. Mine seems to work really well against some deck types and houses, but really poorly against others. I don't know that I consider it a competative deck at this point since it consistently loses to a Neutral House Brotherhod deck and I think Targ burn would just tear it apart.
I would seriously consider Stay of Execution over Feast or Famine. It would likely be a late game plot, and should be two claim for you by that point while still providing good income. Plus, he'll keep your Renly around a little longer if needed. Distinct Mastery is also a good event in decks heavy on crests.
If you are worried about Targ burn, run Stalwart Shield OOH and even Eddard Stark (KLE). For Brotherhood (which are a pain) include Nightmares and Eastwatch.
Nightmare preplot + Valar vs the brotherhood
are you running 3x kingswood trail to get off your power challenges? I'd run at least one black cells as well
