Underneath the Surface : While this card might elicit "ZOMG 'tis brox!" as an initial response it really is in line with the way Cthulhu should be cost reduced. In the end you will need to sacrifice approximately 7 cost worth of cultists and pay 3 to get Cthulhu into play. This card is not so much about overall cost reduction as it is about flattening your need to resource build and creating tough decision for your opponent when targeting removal (as Marius suggests). Of course you will need to be careful to have at least some other character in play if you run up against Yog removal tech... Speaking of Yog, how about running Servant from Out of Time (completely off color) in the deck for a free Cultists?
Intruder from Beyond : ZOMG 'tis brox! Seriously, I hope for the sake of the game that this is the last card we ever see with a Response: pay 0 to play ability... Do people remember the two versions of the Rainbow decks back in the ccg days? Both card set/versions of these where broken. Please FFG, if you did produce cards like this yet again for every faction burn everything now before The Twilight Beckons gets out to the players. In the end I really should not be getting overly worked up because there is no way design would be so idiotic as to introduce a global mechanic across all the factions AGAIN considering how detrimental to the game the previously versions were...
By the way....
I've always heard horrible stories about those super combo decks (rainbow deck, lock deck, estate deck and so on), back in the old dark days of CCG era, but I haven't had a chance to see the actual decklists. Can anybody post them or point me to a web site where they are listed ?
Hope I won't get a "name of the rose" effect by reading those evil manuscripts.
Thanks in advance
As regards the latest yog card I don't yet see the potential of being broken as it is not that different from dreamland fanatic (actually slightly less strong I think). But sure I must be blind.
The Yog card is not a problem itself. The problem is when there are 6-8 cards that you can include in your deck x3 that all come into play for 0 with the same trigger. In other words, you play an event then I get 3 characters...
The old Rainbow cards were dished out in two different forms in consecutive sets.
The first rainbow characters had their cost reduced by 1 (no minimum) for every resource type from a different faction attached to your domains. They were all 4 cost or less so you could play them free by turn 2 at the latest.
The second rainbow characters came into play for 0 as a response to a Ritual being played and bought back. Somehow after the first fiasco design did an even more broken rainbow mechanic! Since every faction had access to a 0 cost Ritual that could be brought back into the hand by draining a domain the trigger requirement could easily reoccur every turn... Play Ritual, Buy Back, Play Rainbow... rinse and repeat...
The problem with the original rainbow deck and especially the ritual rainbow deck is that they where based on a repeatable, voluntairy action. With Intruders you depend on your opponent to trigger them (So, in case of trouble, they can play around them.) Also, ritual rainbow kept bringing characters back, where this is a one-shot deal.
If by playing around them you mean not play any Events then they are toned toned. However, the original Rainbows were more broken than an already broken environment (See Ghoul Khanum). If FFG really releases free triggered characters for every faction then the gate is open for the end of this world...
I think they are both right on! cards. Why cthulhu is always portrayed so humanoid, I'll never know. Both look cool and do cool things. Both have cool stats and utilty. How can you not like cultists summoning cthulhu. Disaster! I mean, that's the whole tamale right there. It's like, the name of the game. Oh wait, it's the mythos beating heart. Brings me back to Sky Torn Asunder. This is almost it's answer. And the other guy is just a tough. All hulking and beefy at the top of the stairs. Oh and he's coming too. Knock knock. Yog is event king. Even the king in yellow can't say much. It's like investigate and MU. Play an event against yog at some peril. You're coming at Keys, Gates, Time, Space, Spheres, recursion. Yog is due. Took second at a regionals. CT won't catch up if more cards like this come up.
Well, I'm kinda excited about those cards :
The Cthulhu's one is pretty interesting in adding possibility to do something with the Cultist. It's exactly the kind of stuff which might be a nice inclusion in a Yog/Cthulhu deck (cultist for 0, recursion). The new Cthulhu version offer the possibility to have a great finisher, which I found usefull.
The second card is a card that use the trigger from your opponent strategy. It's more a "destruction strategy" answer than a real gain of power for Yog. But, if you consider this as an independant (a subtype which start to decrease its power as they have no new cards for some AP now!), that's you need to play it from your hand (not discard pile) + it will only allow loops with Silver Twilight's bump, I don't feel like it's a powerhouse.
A nice new card, but it will only gain 2 slots from my Yog decks...
