A few rules questions...

By dedman2, in WFRP Rules Questions

Greetings to all. I am set to run our first WFRP game tomorrow night and we are all pretty excited about it. I love the system and see a lot of potential in the mechanics compared to other systems I have played.

I have a few rules questions for you.

1. Is it possible to assist in combat? All of the examples I have seen are for non-combat actions (healing).

2. I realize that all melee and missile attacks get a default easy (1 purple die) difficulty level. However, it seems that ALL actions using the "vs. defense" would also be at this default level, according to the FAQ (pg 2). So why not just say that any action listed as "vs. defense" is default easy difficulty? Am I missing something?

3. If a priest fails to invoke a prayer, does he lose favor or not? If I have it right, he only "spends" favor once he has successfully invoked the prayer. This is unlike the wizard, who spends the power prior to casting the spell.

Thank you for the help.

Quick answers:

1. I don't see any reason why a character couldn't assist in combat.

2. "vs. defence" means not only the 1 challenge die base difficulty, but also 1 misfortune die for each point of Defence possessed by the target.

3. The priest doesn't lose any favour if he fails to invoke the blessing; it only starts consuming favour if he succeeds.

As trystero said.

I will point out regarding #1, however, that there are actually Action cards for assisting other players in combat. Take a look through the Support action cards, including some of the Basic Actions. gui%C3%B1o.gif

1- you can spend a maneuver to assist an ally engaged with you and your target (melee). He'll get a fortune die from it (assist maneuver is described in the rules somewhere)

2- you can also (along with your base Defense rating) use Active Defense cards like Block/Dodge/Parry or similar (Reaction trait) that may influence the attacker's pool

3- (previous poster is wrong, p. 32 of ToBlessings) Priests lose one 1 Favor on a failed Blessing check (being Invoking, Piety or other skill check), where Wizards spend the full Power cost of the spell, whatever the issue of the casting is.

Well spotted, Cwell2101: I had indeed forgotten the 1 favour cost for a failed invocation of a blessing on Tome of Blessings 32. Thanks for the correction!
