Detection Rating Numbers?

By VirtualWizard, in Rogue Trader Rules Questions

Hello,

I'm planning on adding a couple more ship types to the roster of those available to my game. Using Battle Fleet Gothic and information taken from various websites/wikis, I've been able to make educated guesses for most of the characteristics for these ships. However, I'm puzzled on the Detection rating. Is there some rhyme or reason for the various ratings assigned to the ships in the core book and Into the Storm ?

As an aside, I think it would be much better to match the Detection rating with the chosen/purchased auger array.

It seems some ships have better antennae mountings (the hull's base Detection) which is then modified by the Auger Array chosen. This is the only explanation for why a Deep Void Auger Array on a Lunar-class is no better than a Mark-100 Auger Array on a Dauntless-class.

I can see how this would work better placement giving better reception. Though as most Imperial ships look like box shaped cigars, it is hard to believe that all ship don't use the same placement strategy. There must be some tech-priest dogma behind this with heresy and damnation for those that try any thing different ;)

Per the BFG fluff, the Dauntless is designed for long range scouting. So, it is logical that that hull has a higher than average detection value. Most hulls in the game have a detection value of +10 or so... unless the ship description has a good reason for a different value. (i.e. scouts, explorers, command ships and the like have better detection, while merchants often have less.)

Cheers,
