So, a friend recently corrected me on a rule that if a Gate opens as the result of an Arkham encounter, a Doom Token gets added to the Doom Track. Is this true? I have not been able to find any errata to support this idea.

Did you by any chance look in the OFFICIAL FAQ 
?
"Q: When a location card says “a gate and a monster
appear,” is a doom token added to the doom track?
A: Yes." (p. 3)
