Please help me decide which books should I buy.

By Mishiman, in Deathwatch

Hi guys. I am not rpg player but I am big wh40k fan. I try to gather as many wh40k related material as I can but in the same time I like to have all my wh40k things put in as few books as it is possible. I just do not like to have multiple publications that all give me the same info and only few new fluff pieces in each. That is why I bought DW rulebook because together with upcoming Rites of Battle it will give me most info about SM/DW and aditional fluff about IoM. Now I would like to have some deeper info about other parts of wh40k fluff like for example IG or Ecclesiarchy. What do you think, is there a chance to have that info in DW line or should I buy upcoming DH books like Blood of Martyrs? Should I buy cross-system books at all or just stay with DW line? I will be grateful for any help.

If you are wanting to find out more about non-space marine topics, the Dark Heresy books are a good choice. I don't think any of the Deathwatch books will be dealing with things like Imperial Guard or Sisters of Battle in any way other than in passing. The upcoming books that focus on those in DH should easily be usable in DW as supporting cast members and the like.

If you are wanting more monsters and threats, I'm going to also recommend Creatures Anathema from DH and the upcoming Xeno Compendium for RT.

The core-rulebooks, supplements, and codices from the table-top wargame, especially from the first (aka Rogue Trader) and second edition, are a great source of background information. I especially recomend any of the first edition Chaos or Ork supplements, the second edition Codex: Angels of Death, Codex: Sisters of Battle, Codex: Imperial Guard, and Codex: Ultramarines.

These can be tricky to find, but are available in a wide vareity of places on the internet.

The Lexicanum is great for the cliff-notes version of a lot of info: http://wh40k.lexicanum.com/wiki/Main_Page

Dark Heresy will also soon have an Imperial Guard expansion/supplement Only War next fall (2011), and Blood of Martyrs is supposed to detail the Ecclesiarchy more.

As far as the RPG core books, they deal with a generic fluff secion (the here is the universe part) that gets some minor updates and is sometimes toned for the game in question, then the repeat the rules section of the core 40k rules (with updates/additons), then they go into that specific line's characters. So DH will tell you more about the inquisition, RT will tell you more about what RTs are and what they do.

I would tend to agree about the DW books though, they'll be focused on SMs and the Deathwatch in particular, and probably the specifics of the Reach.

Two Books I find my self reffering to alot are Into the Storm(RT) and Ascension(DH) you might consider those, Rite of Battle looks like it might be simular to Into the Storm so could just hold out for that, Ascension has some good enemies and Inquisitional toys/abilities.

Big thanks for your help! Now I wait for Blood of Martyrs to be released. Others non-DW books I am interested are IG, Malleus and Navy ones. Creatures Anathema and RT Xenos books I will probably skip because I think Mark of Xenos for DW will cover that area better.

Well for Navy The Rogue Trader core book has the basics for you. Malleus maybe see Disciples of the Dark Gods, though its a mix just like Creatures Anathema.
