Got core set...Now how to corrupt friends?

By Avii, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

So I just got the core set and now it is my task to corrupt my friends from Magic the gathering. I was wondering in Magic terms what is the best way to describe how each of the house plays? The more I am able to put the game into their terms the easier it will be to corrupt them. Thanks for the help.

I think meeting them half-way may be best.
It depends on person to person, but playing hard to get sometimes does the trick much better.

It is hard to compare since this game has such a different win condition but here is some very general comparison (I haven't played MTG in years so I could be alittle off)

Baratheon (White) benefits the most from characters with powerful effects and can field a couple very good weenie rush decks.

Greyjoy (White, Red) gives you a number of ways to save characters from death and they have decent character and location removal.

Lannister (Green, Blue) is the master of character control. They have many ways to kneel your characters in order to allow them easy challenges. They also have the easiest time amassing resources to play cards and drawing cards.

Martell (Black) is the house that hurts you for hurting them. They can trigger some very power effects from losing battles.

Stark (Black, Green) has large armies and some of the best/easiest ways to outright kill an opposing character. They can play very kill heavy aggro decks or build and beat you with defense decks.

Targaryen (Red, Green?) could be considered the most burnish house. They have multiple cards which reduce the strength on a character and kill it if it's strength is 0. Targ also is the master of attachments, they buff and debuff with them.

I tried to limit myself to just 2 colors max per house but you could make the case that each house has elements from each color in magic. You could likely make this same list with totally different colors for each house.

I think that the best way tomake them love the game is make them read the books. Personally without the books I would never start playing a card game. AGOT is not easy to start with duing to its huge amount of rule, so in your first games focus on friendly match based on basic rule. Game after game you can improve their skill explaining all workflows and so on. The great risk about teaching how to play for the throne is that a newbie get scary with the ruling and the game.

Good luck and let's hope that HBO's telefilm will help our game ;-)

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Now I will have players to show them the might of House Stark and House Targaryen! (my favourite houses in the books and games)

May the old gods be always with you ;-)

my friends and I all play magic...

a few of them decided to pick this game up about a year ago.

how they convinced me to try it out was to play into my interests, i really like red decks in Magic, and big splashy creatures (read: Dragons ;) . so they showed me a Targaryen deck. i thought it was awesome.

a few of them had read the books, and as we were playing they'd mention things here and there, careful not to spoil anything, and i got curious about all these characters we were throwing on the table and all the pictures and names of cards... and decided to read the books.

i don't think i've ever read any book, let alone a series, as fervorously as i did those books. with the combination of wanting to know more about the card game and the naturally addictive qualities of the books, i was in, hook line and sinker.
